The National Theatre (Nemzeti Színház) is found on the banks of the Danube, in the cultural area of the Millennium Quarter between Petőfi and Lágymányosi bridges. While the theatre has a long and storied history, with a number of different homes down the years, the present building was finished in 2002 – this can be clearly seen in the modern design and feel of the circular building. It contains a 619-seat auditorium, and also has an outdoor stage.
The shows here are largely performed in the Hungarian language, but even if you don't speak that tongue you can still enjoy one of the many classics which are staged here on a regular basis.
Take some time to enjoy the adjoining landscaped park, which has been designed as an accompaniment to the performance space. The theatrical theme is further expanded on here, with an entrance archway carved in the shape of stage curtains welcoming you to the manicured gardens. Stroll among sculptures of famous Hungarian actors on the path towards the pond, which contains a vessel's bow rising above the water's surface. Get pleasantly lost in the garden's maze, or follow the looping ramp to the top of the exhibition hall for an excellent vantage over the surrounding area.
Make the short walk to the Hall of Arts, another important part of Budapest's cultural landscape. Hosting regular classical, opera, dance and jazz shows, this is a place loved by all the family, with children often given the opportunity to play musical instruments.
The National Theatre host regular performances: check the website for details of the shows on while you're in town. The theatre's park is always open. Take the suburban railway to Lágymányosi Bridge station or the trolley to the Millenniumi Kulturális Központ stop.
