This landmark building is one of Dusseldorf’s cultural powerhouses with an impressive art collection and a lively concert programme.

The Museum Kunstpalast traces its origins back to the private art collection of Johann Wilhelm II, who left a lasting legacy to the city where he had enjoyed many years as its popular elector. The collection was extended over the centuries and became a foundation in its current form in 2000.

The Gallery of Paintings houses many valuable artworks from Johann Wilhelm’s original bequest. An impressive display of works by Dutch and Flemish masters includes Peter Paul Rubens’ Assumption of the Virgin. There are also numerous fine examples of the Roman and North Italian schools of the 17th and 18th centuries, notably Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini’s Alexander with the Body of Darius.

The Modern Art collection continues the artistic journey through the 19th century to the present day, with paintings, sculptures and multimedia by some of the giants of contemporary art. The remarkable Photographic Archive of the Rhine Art Scene (AFORK) comprises around 6,000 photographs from the 1950s and 60s, offering a fascinating insight into this often overlooked art form.

The Hentrich Glass Collection is one of the largest collections of glassware in Europe, featuring beautiful items from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the glorious Art Deco period, characterised by its bright colours and bold shapes. The Prints and Drawings collection specialises in drawings from the Baroque and Expressionist periods, while the sculpture collection includes many rare pieces from the 14th to 16th centuries.

The museum also hosts a programme of temporary exhibitions by international and local artists. Check the official website to find out what’s on during your visit. The website also contains full programme details for the 800-seat Robert Schumann Saal, which hosts concerts of classical, jazz and folk music.

The Museum Kunstpalast is in the city centre, close to the Hofgarten and the old town. The nearest metro station is Tonhalle/Ehrenhof and there is pay parking nearby. The museum is closed on Mondays.
