Curio Bay Salt House Motel

Curio Bay Salt House Motel

8/10 Good
"A good basic 2 bedroom apartment, well-appointed, with a great view of the bay and direct access to beach (easier going down than returning). However, there are no windows that open (apart from bathroom, not sure about a window above the bed). No source of outside air. We slept poorly because of this. The room became stuffy (and this in the spring, admittedly a warm day). The only ventilation is from the doors, although leaning them open would challenge security and expose the flat to insects and other critters."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Mokoreta?
The best area to stay in Mokoreta is the central village area, particularly along Mokoreta Road.

This area is the heart of the community, offering easy access to the local amenities and the surrounding rural landscapes. Mokoreta Road is the main thoroughfare, where you'll find the local hall, the school, and a few small businesses. It's a quiet, spread-out village surrounded by farmland and native bush.

For families, staying in the central village is ideal due to its proximity to the local school and community facilities. There are often holiday rentals or farm stays in this area that provide a comfortable base for exploring the region. The open spaces and easy access to walking tracks make it a good spot for children to enjoy the outdoors.

Couples looking for a peaceful retreat will also find the central village appealing. The area provides a tranquil setting away from the rush of larger towns, superb for enjoying the natural beauty of Southland.
When is the best time to go to Mokoreta?
The best time to go to Mokoreta is during the summer months, from December to February, when the weather is at its warmest and most settled.

During this period, you can expect long daylight hours and average temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and exploring the Catlins Coast. The warmer weather also means that all attractions, including remote tracks and coastal viewpoints, are easily accessible.

For those planning to enjoy the natural beauty and outdoor adventures, these months offer the most comfortable conditions. The local farms are often bustling with activity, and the rivers are superb for a spot of fishing. It's also a great time to visit for families, as the mild weather allows for extended periods outdoors without the chill of other seasons.

If you prefer fewer crowds and don't mind cooler temperatures, the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) can also be pleasant.
