Historic James Mulvey Carriage house (Whole house)
The Estate of James Mulvey has graced historic Stillwater for 133 years. Located on an acre campus overlooking a ravine on Stillwater’s south hill area, walking distance from downtown, the Italianate stone Carriage House has welcomed guests to a historic inn experience for over 20 years.
Built originally to house the Mulvey’s collection of carriages and fine horses; later made into a home and gifted to his daughter for her wedding. Today the Carriage House has been beautifully renovated to resemble an English cottage in the Cotswolds, complete with a traditional gourmet kitchen, rustic beams, and French doors that cascade out to a balcony overlooking the ravine and the private pool. The rooms are each thematically inspired by everything from the French wine country, to the roaring 20s, and even an ode to the original horse stables in the lower level farmhouse.
The upstairs rooms (Art Deco and Bourdeaux suites) each have their own private bathroom, jet tub, fireplace, and a balcony overlooking the landscape. The lower-level Farmhouse suite is its own separate quarters that house one queen bed and an air mattress; complete with a living area that walks out to the backyard pool, a kitchenette, a private bedroom, and a spacious private bathroom with a luxury shower.
Experience a European getaway, just blocks away from the historic downtown Stillwater.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Carriage House. The unit is clean, well equipped and so cute. We would love to return in the summer when we could use the pool.
Five of us ladies had a wonderful weekend stay at the Carriage House! We especially enjoyed the themed rooms/areas of the house, the big kitchen, and the hot tub (although there were extensive instructions, we almost didn't use it because we didn't want to mess anything up).
A charming property just minutes away from all the cute shops and restaurants in Stillwater. Would definitely stay there again sometime!
My elderly parents, my middle aged sister, her husband and their 2 daughters (20's) thoroughly enjoyed their stay during my son's wedding weekend. The suite downstairs was perfect for my parents - very few stairs and their own lounge area with a mini kitchen. Perfect for their needs.
This was the perfect place for our family to stay while we were in Stillwater for a long weekend celebrating a 50th birthday. We were within walking distance to downtown, although it is a uphill walk back to the house so we chose to Uber back. It's in a nice, safe area with a cafe, bakery, and a bar/restaurant just a few blocks away. I highly recommend this property and would love to return during the summer months to enjoy the pool.
We were in Stillwater for my son's wedding. The moment we stepped into this charming home, we were in love. The place is wonderfully eclectic and very cozy. The bedrooms were decked out with tubs and fireplaces, and the beds were very comfortable. The place was immaculately clean, and when we had a question, the manager responded quickly. I'm sure this place is a blast in the summer when you can use the pool. We would definitely come here again or recommend this house.
The house was perfect. It was an enchanting little get away. The house was roomy, yet cozy. Great for staying in-coking at home, playing games, watching movies, yet close enough to downtown to experience the daytime shopping- restaurants and bars- and night life. Being outside, was like a fairytale. We spent time in the hot tub and pool- and took a lot of pics. I would highly recommend.
Amazing, quirky, fun, comfortable, historical, home in Stillwater
Stayed in mid August for 4 nights. Visiting friends around the Twin Cities. This house is about 30 minutes from both spots so was perfect for us. The home is amazing. Well stocked amd clean. The kids loved the swimming pool and we used it whenever we were at the house. Even hosted some old friends and their kids one evening and everyone just swam and played. Property is on a dead end street bordered by woods on one side. Very quiet. Property managers were easy to communicate with and responded promptly the one time we had a question. It is a great summer rental but now we want to come back and stay in the winter!!! Such a cozy and inviting place. The pictures are 100% accurate. No surprises. This historic home exceeded our expectations!
Thank you!
We loved this home! It was spotless, the living spaces and beds were comfortable, the kitchen nicely stocked and the carriage house was so charming. Two blocks from a beautiful old park and a mile walk into town (steep hill returning home!)
The property was perfect for our family. We had a bedroom and bathroom for each couple with a suite for my daughter’s family. The kitchen and dining area is large enough for preparing and enjoying meals together as well as space for playing games together.
We had a fantastic time staying at your beautiful VRBO. Enjoyed the hot tub and pool after fun shopping in Hudson,WI and Stillwater.Lots of laughter with friends, creating memories and time together! Thank you!
The property is beautiful, enough space for all of us. The pool and spa were excellent, beds were clean and comfortable. Close to everything in downtown Stillwater but also very private and secluded. Was woken one morning by a barn owl outside the deck, great watching the squirrels blue jays and cardinals. Close enough to the downtowns of Minneapolis and St Paul. Hiking, biking water sports are all right there. Great food and live music scene. This was an absolute perfect base for all this
Having lived in Cornwall, England, we felt liked we’d been whisked away to England. The home is so incredibly charming. It was the perfect base camp for our family.
