In the town centre, there is also a statue commemorating the iron industry, showing 'The Scutcher,' who used an iron bar and his own might to stop the iron ore tubs. This town was also home to writer Norman Nicholson, who has a stained glass window dedicated to him in St. George's Church, as well as the bizarre 'fish' window in the Holy Trinity Church.
