I knew when I booked a new listing with no reviews, I was taking a gamble, but I gave it a try anyway. The host was prompt to confirm the booking, to answer a question about the address and the unit was as described in the listing. From my very first step into the lobby, a moldy, foul smell hit my nose. There were several fish tanks around, so I tried to dismiss it, but even when getting off the elevator on the 18th floor, I could still smell it. I forged ahead and opened the unit only to step into water that was pouring down the wall. I went inside and immediately messaged the host but didn’t get a response (in their defense, it was later in the evening). I waited for approx 20 mins but that same moldy smell was all around me and I didn’t feel safe sleeping there. With the age of the building there’s no telling what is behind those walls. I went to speak to check-in attendant and maintenance men. I was told that I could maybe get a different room, but no one seemed to know how that would happen. With the strong odor in the common areas of the building and in the unit, I had no confidence that a different room would give me a pleasant, healthy environment, so I made the decision to leave. The owner made no attempts to make this situation right but with the help of VRBO, I was able to get my money back. I would never rent from this owner or this building again.
