The Medellín Museum of Modern Art displays more than 1,300 pieces of modern and contemporary artwork, including paintings, films and sculptures. The museum also puts on a series of modern art workshops and presentations. Browse the museum’s collection then spend some time outside in the square, which is near cafés, restaurants and a pleasant park.
Peruse the museum’s four air-conditioned showrooms and see the immense collection on display. Many of the works are by local artist Débora Arango. Head over to the Sala de Fundiciones (Ironworks Room), where a variety of art house films are projected onto the walls. Stop by the museum gift shop to buy art supplies and souvenirs. For dinner, visit the in-house restaurant, Bonaur, or dine in one of the many restaurants that line the square. This large plaza is replete with cafés and shops, and has an friendly atmosphere. Many of the bars and restaurants offer live music.
The museum is situated on the former site of a steel mill, which was in operation from 1939 to 2009. There is an entrance fee, but students and children under 12 get in free. The museum is open every day of the week except Mondays, from mid morning to late afternoon.
At the rear of the museum is the Ciudad del Rio Park. This green space is an excellent place for a picnic or to join in a pickup soccer game.
The Medellín Museum of Modern Art is located between the subway stops of Industriales and Poblado. When you are finished visiting the museum, head over to the wealthy Poblado district to explore trendy cafés and shops. The museum is a 10-minute cab ride from Medellin’s southern bus terminal.
