Alabama’s stunning coastline, fascinating civil rights history and a rich cultural legacy meet in one of the most appealing regions of the state.

Lower Alabama, also known as South Alabama, offers an enticing mixture of Deep South culture, atmospheric landscapes and family-friendly attractions. The region encompasses both the historic city of Montgomery and the golden, sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast. In between these two popular destinations are several scenic state parks. Visit the region to experience both informative historical sights and a sun-drenched coastline.

Learn about the state’s troubled history in destinations such as Montgomery, site of the famous bus boycott, and Selma, where Martin Luther King Jr led a march. Pause for a moment of reflection at the Civil Rights Memorial before exploring the adjoining museum that charts the course of the movement.

Discover stories of heroism in the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, which celebrates the achievements of a battalion of African-American pilots in World War II. Literature fans will enjoy exploring the historic center of Downtown Monroeville, the charming city that inspired Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.

The Deep South destination is famed for its country music. Listen to toe-tapping tunes and learn about one of the genre’s greats in Montgomery’s Hank Williams Museum.

Head to the far south of Alabama to visit the state’s beautiful Gulf Coast. Enjoy the high-speed thrills of watersports or spend a day on the beach near the city of Gulf Shores.

Farther west along the coast, the city of Mobile is packed with engaging attractions. At Battleship Memorial Park, step aboard decommissioned warships, including the mighty USS Alabama. Take your children to the Gulf Coast Exploreum, a science center with interactive exhibits for all ages.

Montgomery and Mobile both offer regional airports for quick access to Lower Alabama. This southernmost region in the state rarely experiences very cold weather. Put on light clothes for a trip to the coast in summer, when the days are hot and the ocean is warm. Summer also welcomes a wide array of music and food festivals to the shores of the Gulf, as well as Fourth of July celebrations each year.
