About this property
Bairro Alto Apartment With Balcony
Our quaint cozy flat in one of Lisbon's trendiest areas, hip Bairro Alto. European charm in Lisbon's historical city center, this ceramic-tile-covered stone building is near the must-see bits of Western Europe's top destinations.
It's in Bairro Alto's legendary bar & restaurant district - but on a bar-free street - an oasis of calm in the winding cobblestone streets. Three blocks to Tram 28, a less than 10 min. walk to Príncipe Real, Baixa-Chiado metro, Cais do Sodré and lots more.
Our flat/apartment is in a building nearly two centuries old. It captures the essence of Lisbon and its ancient history, sitting in the center of a typical historical neighborhood. It occupies the entire 3rd floor of its building (4th floor by American standards) with a full-length narrow balcony. This affords a view of the winding street below and a glimpse of the Tejo River flowing into the Atlantic in the distance (about a thousand meters down the hill).
The space is an old-world style open layout with two bedrooms adjacent and another bedroom opening onto the balcony. Hardwood floors cover all areas except the bathroom. There are a decent number of electric sockets available throughout. A number of closets, dressers, and a wardrobe provide adequate storage space.
The living area has a small dining table that seats four; sofa and living room chairs accommodate five. This is also where the cable TV and the Wifi router are (with signal throughout the flat). A wifi printer is available. Two doors open onto a Romeo & Juliette-style long narrow balcony from where one can see part of the old city sloping down to the river/sea.
With the balcony doors open, a pleasant breeze usually prevails if the kitchen and back bedroom windows are open to create a cross-draft, supplemented by floor fans. When the breeze and fans are not enough, a small portable air conditional (A/C) supports the two adjacent bedrooms and the living room only if all adjoining doors are left open. The third bedroom will probably not benefit from the A/C.
The bathroom includes a shower. There are electric sockets for appliances such as hairdryers available over the sink.
The old-style modest kitchen has most small appliances including microwave, hand blender, blender, electric kettle, coffee maker, and toaster. Larger appliances include a stove/oven and, fridge with bottom freezer. A clothes washing machine also dries small loads, or you can use a small folding clothesline. Plates, cups, silverware, and of course basic food preparation accessories are provided. A small fold-out table and stools afford 1-2 people a spot for a quick bite if desired.
You will have exclusive access to the whole flat/apartment. It occupies the entire 3rd floor (4th floor to Americans) of the building. Built a hundred years before elevators/lifts, it has only stairs. The toughest haul is the first & last - bringing your baggage up & down. Be prepared for a heavy schlep!
When you arrive you will be totally independent to explore every exciting part of Lisbon at your own pace.
Lisbon's moderate climate is one of its premier attributes. Although it can get warm during summer afternoons, ocean breezes cool the city at night. With the mild weather and cool summer evening breezes, residences typically don't need air conditioning, especially with fans in each room. However, we do have a small portable A/C that cool the two bedrooms and the living room if the adjoining doors are left open.
Lisbon is warmer than most of Europe - with palm trees! - but is definitely not tropical and does get very chilly, especially January - February. It does not reach freezing, even in the coldest times, but the classic architecture and design of buildings in the old city center, including this apartment, don't have the best insulation. We have three space heaters to help keep off the cold, but do bring an extra sweater or two.
We strive to be environmentally conscious. To that end over 80% of the apartment's electricity comes from green, renewable resources; primarily wind but also hydroelectric and other renewable resources.
The apartment has an open floor plan, with stout wooden antique doors keeping each bedroom private.

Many thanks to Joana for her kind words and support from start to finish. Her quaint apartment was exactly as described. The 56 very narrow & winding steps with luggage was worth our enjoyable stay in this historical area. We felt safe at night walking back to the apt from nearby entertainment and restaurants.
Joana and José were great hosts...responsive and gave clear instructions about the check in process. The apartment is perhaps even a little bigger than the set of photos I originally saw attached to the listing. Two beds of at least full size are available. Location is near the popular bar district but far enough removed to where noise is not an issue at all. We had a very enjoyable stay!
Good communication with host on check-in. Using the long key to lock / unlock door takes some getting used to! Bed is comfortable. Kitchen is stocked with everything u need. The only complaint is the stairwell is up 3 flights of steps that are narrow. Hall light is on a timer, so be careful going up and down. Really nice stay!
I can’t say how pleasantly surprised I was to find this apartment in top shape condition considering the old building in a very old part of Lisbon. The living room was very spacious with a tv, couch and dining table. You can consider this a 3 bedroom flat with one small office that has a small sofa bed, the other rooms have a queen bed and two twins. The kitchen has everything needed from coffee machine to microwave and fridge. Hosts are very friendly and eager to make your stay enjoyable, I had a request and they delivered first thing in the morning. Highly recommend.
My mom and I stayed here on her birthday trip. Joana was so lovely & accommodating with a few issues we had - but she was very responsive. The street / area is much noisier than we expected & kept us up two nights, but that’s certainly not her fault! Just didn’t expect the tucked away street to be quite so loud with people.
Keep in mind, you’re walking up 3 flights of stairs, so if mobility is an issue, you may not want to stay here. It was a nice place, though, and it was convenient to where we wanted to be.
Overall, a very central location. The amenities were nice. I don’t think it was mentioned in the listing but make sure to separate garbage because you’ll have to take it out before you leave!
Joana is a great host and super helpful. We wanted to experience Lisbon in a neighborhood and the apartment was perfect. Old world charm and lots of great things to do nearby and walking distance. It is as pictured and was very clean with comfortable beds. We were very pleased with our stay,
We had a great stay! We loved how close it was to public transport options. Usually about a 12 min walk. Check in was easy and quick, which was nice because we arrived late evening. There were some mini markets nearby that made groceries pretty easy. There is a very noisy bar nearby, so be aware if you are a light sleeper. We were fine by closing the windows and shades and turning some white noise on, but some might prefer more quiet. Overall great stay, plenty of room for the 5 of us.
Apartment was adorable. Hosts very responsive. It is however listed as "air conditioned" but only one small room in the back was so it was quite hot in the rest of the apartment which wasn't great for sleeping - esp in the main bedroom. That was a search criteria for us for an early August trip.
The apartment was a terrific size for a couple, and adequate for 2 couples or a family. The location is good, right in the heart of Bairro Alto. Yes, the neighborhood is noisy at night, but nothing bothersome. Comfortable bed, well-appointed kitchen, nice living room space. I agree with a previous comment that the dining room chairs need to be replaced, but that would be my only negative comment. Would definitely recommend.

Unsatisfactory Check-in
Upon arrival in Lisbon we had no access to the lock boxes, no email or text communication from VRBO, this led to a less than satisfactory check-in process as we had to buzz neighbors on the ground floor to gain access. Having stood outside for more than 15-20 trying to figure out entry was not ideal in a strange city. Aside from this an no toilet paper to use for approximately one day the stay was great. Loved the location of the unit and the effective communication with the host.

Bairro Alto Review
This apartment is located in a nice quiet street and in a quiet building in Bairro Alto, but... it is Bairro Alto, and understandably so, not entirely quiet at night. The apartment has lots of character (including squeaky floors, somewhat tight lay-out), as is clear enough from the pictures. However, the following can be improved upon (and should be easily fixable): (1) access by app in principle is fine, but the communication channel needs to be monitored real time, at the agreed upon check-in time in case the app is not functioning as it should (as was the case for us); (2) the dining room chairs should be fixed (some are dangerously rickety); (3) the locks on the balcony doors need to be repaired (the doors easily blow open under windy/rainy weather conditions); and (4) the kitchen could be better equipped (e.g. add breakfast bowls, replace scratched Tefal pots).
