The best area to stay in Les Mées is directly within the village centre, particularly around the Church of Saint-Pierre, for convenient access to local amenities and the distinctive geological formations of the Pénitents.

The village centre is compact and easy to navigate on foot. The Church of Saint-Pierre, a historic landmark, is a natural focal point, and you'll find the main street, Rue des Pénitents, lined with a few local shops, bakeries, and restaurants. This area offers a genuine experience of village life in Provence.

For couples seeking a relaxed and picturesque holiday, staying in the heart of Les Mées is ideal. You'll be within easy walking distance of local eateries where you can enjoy regional cuisine, and the stunning Pénitents des Mées are visible from many points within the village, offering a unique backdrop for strolls. It's also a good base for exploring the lavender fields and olive groves of the surrounding Durance valley.

Travellers with an interest in local culture and geology will also find the village centre appealing.

The best time to go to Les Mées is typically from late spring to early autumn, specifically from May to September, when the weather is most agreeable for outdoor activities.

During these months, you can expect warm, sunny days great for exploring the lavender fields, which are usually in full bloom around June and July. This period also offers ideal conditions for hiking and cycling along the Durance River or in the surrounding Lure Mountain area. The longer daylight hours mean more time to enjoy the natural beauty and take in the views of Les Pénitents.

Couples often find May, June, and September particularly appealing for a more relaxed visit, avoiding the busiest crowds of mid-summer. The temperatures are pleasant for enjoying al fresco dining and exploring the small villages nearby without the intense heat of August. It's a lovely time for leisurely drives through the countryside and wine tasting.

For families, July and August are excellent choices, as the warmer weather is great for swimming in local rivers or lakes and enjoying outdoor adventures. Many local festivals and markets are also in full swing during these peak summer months, offering entertainment and local produce.
