"Amazing - no other words needed! A two night stay in one of the tree houses - had the camp to ourselves , which was perfect. Staff were fabulous and went out of their way to ensure our meals were varied both in location and food . Excellent on both counts . Wild elephant encounter on our way in, had to reroute on the way out due to ele on the road (? Same guy?) . But a great detour . Just chilled in the fish spa and ate lots. "

"From the moment we arrived at Jungle Eco Lodge & Safari, we were made to feel completely at home. Kumari and her husband, Neshanta, went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. They were incredibly kind and caring towards our children, making them feel so welcome from day one. The homemade Sri Lankan breakfast was absolutely delicious, with fresh fruit picked from the beautiful trees surrounding the lodge, which Kumari uses in her cooking. The setting is peaceful and full of wildlife....

"Really very nice home stay near to the lake and the Museum. The landlady is very helpful and does everything to make the stay comfortable . The bycicle is brought to your room, this is the best way to see the sites, also the entrance is quite near. In the evening the landlady cooks a nice curry for you - or whatever you want - and she also has beer! All in all a very agreeable stay. The bathroom could have been a little cleaner though."

Top Jayanthipura Hotel Reviews

Recent Reviews in Jayanthipura

Jetwing Vil Uyana, A Luxury Reserve

10/10 Excellent

"A singular property, this is a resort with a sustainable difference. We loved the open design of our suite, the expansive land and water elements, and wonderful service. Our butler, Yasori (sp) was so helpful, professional and kind. We look forward to returning again to this place of coexistence with the natural world. Thank you."

Kolla Watersong Eco Cabana resort

8/10 Good

"Our stay at Kolla was fantastic and a brilliant start to our trip in Sri Lanka. The setting of the huts, albeit away from centre of Sigiriya, are a highlight looking over the lake and especially as we had a family of elephants on the far side both evenings we were there. The hosts were great in organising a tuktuk for us for the first morning to Pedurangala rock for a sunrise hike. The breakfasts were incredible and amazingly presented (included in price), the dinners were delicious with a cooking masterclass experience organised one afternoon for lunch. Additionally, the host also went to the extra mile to go out to provide us with drinks they didn’t have available at the time. I would note that we were not told prices of the lunch, dinner and drinks when being served which would be helpful so not to have a surprise bill at the end of the stay. Overall, fantastic stay and highly recommend this to anyone wanting a secluded spot to enjoy the nature Sigiriya has to offer."

Sigiriya King's Resort

10/10 Excellent

"as amazing as siguriya itself is, and it is, the staff at king's resort were the highlight. nothing was too much trouble, true professional hospitality, it was great. we were there for our 20th wedding anniversary and they made it special. sri lanka is amazing. truely. did i mention the plunge pool? you'll prob want to get that. the big pool is brilliant but the plunge pool, for us, was really special"

Hotel Sigiriya

10/10 Excellent

"This is a large hotel and there did seem to be a couple of large groups staying there but this did not detract from our experience. Nice rooms with everything you could need, water readily provided. The pool is ok but the selling point for it is the fantastic view of Lions Rock. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the buffet had a good selection of food to suit all palates. Breakfast was excellent, you can choose Sri Lankan or more western options. Plenty of choice. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel."

Sunshine Resort and Spa

10/10 Excellent

"Our hosts were welcoming and delightful. The hospitality made our visit of Sigiriya most memorable. The rooms were clean and the food was fresh and delicious. With ease of access to the restaurants, and of course Lion's Rock, we took in the sunrise from a most impressive ancient civilization! Highly recommended."

Cinnamon Lodge

10/10 Excellent

"An absolutely wonderful hotel, with a calm, serene atmosphere, that blends in beautifully with it's surroundings. Cinnamon Lodge is the antitheses of a generic, bland, modern hotel, which exudes a sense of unfussy sophistication. The Cinnamon Group's website does not do justice to the architecture or to how lovely the grounds are. The architect took inspiration from the ruins of nearby Ritigala temple (well worth a visit), and it's amazing how comfortably the buildings blend in with the vast grounds. The rooms are huge and nicely furnished, without being "glitzy". We stayed in a suite that was essentially a two story house, and comes with your own butler - in our case Lalith, who made our stay complete - reserving tables, remembering your favourite drink and generally anticipating your every need. The food was consistently excellent over our five night stay. The staff are all warm, charming and do their best to make your stay a memorable one. They are led by an excellent management team, who are visible, approachable and highly competent. Our stand-out memory is of the wildlife - not just at the nearby national parks, but within the hotel grounds. Incredible bird-life, monkeys, monitor lizards, and even an elephant beside the lake. This was all brought to life for us by the hotel's resident naturalist team (in particular Kintu), and we recommend you seek out their expertise. An oasis of calm, in the heart of the cultural triangle."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Jayanthipura?

Given its focus on the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the best area to stay in Jayanthipura is generally within Polonnaruwa New Town, particularly along the main road leading to the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Site.

This area offers the most convenient access to the ancient city's historical treasures. You'll find a good selection of guesthouses and hotels lining the main route, often with views of the surrounding greenery or close to the Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama) reservoir. It's the hub for visitors, with local eateries and shops suiting tourists.

For couples interested in history and exploring the ancient city at a relaxed pace, staying near the main entrance to the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Site is ideal. This allows for easy access to landmarks like the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle, and the Gal Vihara, often reachable by bicycle or a short tuk-tuk ride. Many accommodations in this area also offer bicycle rentals, superb for exploring the ruins.

Families might prefer options slightly set back from the main road, closer to the Parakrama Samudra. These often provide more space and a quieter setting, with some offering amenities like swimming pools.

When is the best time to go to Jayanthipura?

The best time to go to Jayanthipura is during the dry season, which runs from April to September.

During these months, the weather is consistently sunny with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the ancient city and its surroundings. You'll find it comfortable for visiting iconic sites like the Polonnaruwa Vatadage and the Gal Vihara. This period is also superb for wildlife safaris in nearby national parks, as animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to spot.

Families often find this a great time to visit as the pleasant weather allows for full days of outdoor activities without the interruption of heavy rain.
