Isla Taquile is a tiny island in the Peruvian side of the huge Lake Titicaca, situated at an altitude of over 12,000 ft.

La sociedad taquileña está basada en el trabajo colectivo y en el código moral Inca "Ama sua, ama llulla, ama quella" (no robarás, no mentirás y no serás perezoso). Actualmente su economía se basa en la pesca, la agricultura de la papa en los andenes y el turismo, recibe anualmente 40,000 turistas. Los taquileños son especialmente conocidos por sus tejidos, los que se encuentran dentro de la más fina artesanía no solo en Perú sino en el mundo. "Taquile y su arte téxtil" fueron honrados al ser proclamados "obras maestras del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad” por la UNESCO. Cabe resaltar que el hilado y el tejido es hecho principalmente por hombres, comenzando a la edad de ocho años. Las mujeres hacen exclusivamente de hilados y tejidos.
La vida en Taquile es todavía en gran parte sin cambios por la modernidad del continente. No hay coches y hoteles en la isla solo hay unas pequeñas tiendas que venden los productos básicos. La mayoría de las familias utilizan velas o linternas con baterías o manivelas.
