Hangzhou

This scenic region of China attracts visitors from across the world with its natural wonders and collection of preserved cultural icons.

Hangzhou is a large city in China known for its charming historical streets and canals and its natural wonders in the countryside. It is one of the most visited areas of the country. The area is popular in spring and winter when the climate is pleasant.

The city played a key role as capital of the Southern Song Dynasty that reigned in the 12th and 13th centuries. During that era, the city’s population reached 1 million, but has since multiplied nine times. There is an abundance of upscale accommodation across the city, which has a generally welcoming vibe toward foreigners.

Get to know the downtown area of the city with a walk through Qinghefang Street, a fine example of a historic promenade. Haggle with market vendors and watch the production of traditional handicrafts and works of art. Taste culinary treats, such as “dragon whisker” sweets and roasted walnuts. This market setting is typical throughout the municipality, as can be seen at China Silk City, where you can barter for high-quality fabrics.

Hangzhou is famous for its quaint canals. Take a romantic stroll along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The picturesque stream covers around 1,700 kilometres (1,000 miles) across the Chinese countryside. Learn about the origins of the canal, which is the earliest and longest of its kind in the world.

The city’s most iconic traveller hangout is West Lake, a stunning UNESCO site that has been preserved and renovated. There is a plethora of activity in the area. Cross the Broken Bridge, ascend to Baochu Pagoda’s base and admire the elaborate halls of the Lingyin Temple.

There are many parks and pretty gardens on the edge of West Lake. Wonder at the bright array of colours at the tulip festival of Prince Bay Park in the spring. Embrace the vibrant collection of plants, trees and flowers at Hangzhou Botanical Garden.

Take a flight to Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, near the city. Hong King and Beijing are popular connecting cities. Once in the city, travel using the intricate bus and subway systems.

Hangzhou is an enchanting city full of intricate canal systems and a stunning lake.

Our party of 20pax arrived at 10pm to checkin and the hotel staff took note of a request I made earlier in terms of room arrangements - connecting rooms, rooms on the same floor, etc. Excellent and extremely helpful front desk staff.
