We appreciate our guests comments and sometimes like to respond to their concerns for future prospective guests to evaluate. None of the rentals on the Hana, east side of the island, resort to AC. The beauty of this area is the northeast Tradewinds and ocean breezes. This allows us to keep all the windows and French doors open to hear the birds, smell the pure air and be connected to the outdoors. Mid summer, midday does get warm but by late afternoon the long sleeve shirts come out after a day at the beach. There are 3 Casablanca ceiling fans and a couple floor fans. We have had guests contact us to find out what kind of mattresses we use, because they had such a good nights sleep. Firm, medium or soft mattresses is all relative to the particular person and many of our guests do not want a soft mattress. We recently purchased a very expensive main chair for the living room, that is spacious and very comfortable. We think a lot of our guests have really enjoyed its use. The couch is a genuine vintage Hawaiian tropical design, that was newly refurbished. It was chosen to create a classic Hawaiian feel to the decor. We have new rosewood dining table and chair set that is truly unique and upper end. The chairs are a beautiful heavy rose wood and now we are thinking a soft cushion on each would be a comfortable addition.

We would like to address what occurred, in order to put it in the proper light. We had a problem with carpenter ants at the house a few months ago. At that time, we contacted the pest control company we have been using and they assured us that their services would remedy the situation; it seemed to us that the treatment had solved the problem. After the reviewer called us to report that the ants were back, I returned his call twice. There was no answer on the house phone, so I made a personal visit to the house to connect with the guests. We had a nice visit on the outdoor deck and he had the chance to express concerns he may have had about their stay. The reviewers, comment on my statement about our prior knowledge of the ants was a distortion of what was actually said. Once alerted to the problem, we took immediate action: we closed the house, arranged for professional extermination and informed our incoming guests of the issue. In one case we provided alternative accommodations for our scheduled guests, in the owner's home down the road. I offered to give the reviewer a 1 night refund to help balance the inconvenience, however in the confusion I overlooked the guest's payment. It was an honest oversight easily remedied; we have since issued him a full refund for the entire stay. Truly, Hana is in the middle of a tropical rainforest. The very finest homes and even the Hana-Manu Resort (at $$$ per night) occasionally have the same problems with pests. We have since fired our original pest Control company and have hired a different company. Our VRBO listing states; ceiling fans in all the rooms and additional floor fans. None of the rentals in Hana (and yes not even the Hotel-Maui resort) have air conditioning. Hana is blessed with steady trade winds and a cooler climate. We are going to close down Hale Manu again this month in order to have all new windows and doors installed and to update our Hawaiian furniture. This should make the Hale Manu Guest House shine! We have been in business for 15 years and have maintained a 5 star rating. We love the property and treasure our relationships with our guests. This review will undoubtedly harm our business and is especially worrisome coming on the heels of a pandemic year when we were largely shut down. We thank our guests for their thoughtful review. It's true, we have been struggling with a carpenter ant problem for the past several months. We have a professional pest control company service the house and advise us on how to treat the problem. We had made several changes on vegetation clearing around the outside of the house as well as removing decorative rocks that use to accent the exterior. We have had inside and outside pest control treatments regularly and thought we had the ant problem cured. Now we see the only remedy is to tent the house, which we will have done right away. Fortunately a carpenter ant is harmless and never bite. The furniture is the early Hawaiian vintage style and was originally purchased to have that old time Hawaii look. We recently had the couch fully reupholstered but some of the wood shows wear and tear. Some of the vintage chairs are meant to swivel and have become a little wobbly. I can fix that easily and will do so. The refrigerator is another item that we have keep an eye on for some time now. The magnetic door seal seems to be underperforming and needs a little push to make the proper seal. We have a sign on the refrigerator door to give it a little push. When we go there every few days to clean the houses, the fridge always seems to be working fine. Our last guests did not have such good luck with it, so most likely it's time to replace it with a new one.
