Major art museums and a sculpture collection, manicured lawns and a children’s playground make this one of Santiago’s most-loved public parks.

Escape the bustle of Santiago’s city center and visit the scenic Parque Forestal (Forest Park), a place to enjoy a fusion of relaxation, recreation and cultural activities. The park is the green lung of the city, as it stretches for several blocks along the perimeter of the Mapocho River. It is home to museums showcasing contemporary and fine art, a children’s playground and landscaped green lawns.

With leafy walkways winding around well-kept lawns, the park is ideal for a gentle stroll or even jogging and cycling. Check out sculptures and statues in the park’s Parque de las Esculturas (Sculpture Park). Among these is a monument to the Battle of Iquique and a horse sculpture by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. On the eastern side of the park is the Fuente Alemana (German Fountain).

Sit on a bench or find a quiet spot on the grass verges under horse chestnut and sycamore trees. The park is even more picturesque in fall when the trees change color. See courting couples, dog walkers and local workers enjoying the tranquility. Keep an eye open for impromptu street performances, such as capoeira dancing. Kids will enjoy the large playground, complete with swings and climbing frames.

The park is home to two museums set in a grand neoclassical palace. Admire national and international paintings from the 15th century onward at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts). Find work by artists such as Damien Hirst and Isamu Noguchi at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Museum of Contemporary Art). The museums offer free admission on Sunday.

Combine your visit to the park with a visit to the Mercado Central, a lively food market that is famous for its fish and seafood. Try unusual dishes, such as picorocos (edible barnacles) and erizos (sea urchins).

Situated in Santiago’s historic center, Parque Forestal is a short walk from Plaza de Armas. Public buses, the metro and a hop-on, hop-off tourist bus stop at various points around the park. Major city attractions, such as the Catedral de Santiago and Santa Lucía Hill, are just a 10-minute walk away.
