No matter where you're coming from, flying can be a pleasurable experience if you're prepared. We've made a list of handy tips and tricks that will get your Voves escape started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Flying can be a cruisy experience if you pack the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletry items, such as lip balm and hand cream, a spare change of clothes and something to read. Next, find room in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your important medications and maybe a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, remember to bring your passport, travel documents and some money.

Pointed or sharp objects, like a pocket knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, bleaching agents and fireworks, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane aren't the place for a fashion parade. Dress in comfortable layers and go for shoes that are flat, enclosed and easy to take on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Have your ID and boarding pass close by. They're the first items you'll be asked for by security.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your belt, coat, keys and other small items, like your headphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• All your electronic gadgets, including your tablet and phone, must also be scanned separately.
• Want to bring along your favourite perfume or cologne? No problem. As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, it's fine to bring with you on board.
• It's also possible you'll be required to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a wise idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, put them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board.
