Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a seamless experience if you're prepared. We've put together a list of handy tips that will get your Valle escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a stress-free experience if you take the right things. First of all you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a magazine or two. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, any medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow as well. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like a Swiss Army knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as spray paint, flares and poisons, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Choose comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes by wearing layers, and wear flat, slightly roomy footwear like slip-ons.
• Caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect some passengers during long-distance flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your legs moving and wearing compression socks or tights.

• Be sure to have your boarding pass and ID handy. They're the first things you'll be asked to show at airport security.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• All electronic devices, including your phone and laptop, must also be separately scanned.
• Can't travel without your favourite hand and nail cream? No problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, it's fine to bring with you on board.
• It's also possible you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them safely away in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
