• A plane ride can be a comfortable experience if you bring the right things. Firstly, you'll need toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh change of clothes and a good novel. Secondly, find room in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, any vital medications and perhaps a comfy neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to take your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hair gel in your checked baggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp objects, like a pocket knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and fireworks, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• Choose comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by donning layers, and wear flat, slightly roomy shoes like sneakers.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by extended periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.
