• Your travel documents and ID will need to be presented to security personnel. Have them close by to avoid fumbling around for them.
• Next up, both you and your hand luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Personal belongings like your coat, belt and headphones need to go through the machine.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray for inspection. Don't worry though, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Remove gels and liquids from your hand luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit in a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you're less likely to have to remove them when passing through security. Safety boots and other heavy shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in the cabin. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked luggage.
