• Flying can be a comfortable experience if you bring the right stuff. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a spare change of clothes and a good book. Next, make room in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, medications and perhaps a cosy neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between airlines, the general rule to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes box cutters, razor blades, aerosol cans and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could harm other people, such as swords and guns, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your top priority is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose a pair of flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, natural fibers and don't forget to take a sweater in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• It's likely you've heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To reduce your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and move your legs and feet often.

• Your passport and boarding pass will need to be inspected by airport security. Have them close by so you don't have to dig around for them.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• For just a few minutes, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your phone, laptop and any other electronics will need to be sent through the scanner.
