Wherever you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're prepared. We've put together a list of handy hints that will get your Mexico escape started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you've got all the right stuff. Firstly, you'll want a few toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a spare set of clothes and a magazine or two. Secondly, make room in your bag for your electronic devices, chargers, any medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, remember to bring your passport, travel documents and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Pointed or sharp objects, like your Swiss Army knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, bleaching agents and matches, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Wear layers and go for shoes that are flat and easy to slip on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by extended periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin or do some simple exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

It's all about being organised. We've rounded up some useful tips for a speedy trip through airport security. Watch out Mexico, here you come:

• First things first. Your ID and travel documents will need to be shown to airport security personnel. Have them easily accessible so you don't hold up the line.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• Electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. Don't worry, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Travelling with your favourite cologne? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, it's fine to bring with you on board.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you valuable minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Pocket knives and other sharp items are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked bags.
