• It's simple — first, pack in your passport, official ID, credit cards and medications. Next, you'll want some in-flight entertainment to help pass the time. A thrilling novel and a phone filled with your favourite shows are some terrific options. If you plan to take a short snooze, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, leave space for a toothbrush and some facial wipes so you'll step off the plane feeling fresh as a daisy.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp objects, like a Swiss Army knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as flares, bleaching agents and strong acids, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-distance flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.
