Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you prepare well enough. We've put together a list of handy tips and tricks that will get your Manchester holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be easy if you carry the right things. First of all you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a spare set of clothes and a magazine or two. Next, find a spot in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, any medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, don't forget to take your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in one of the compartments of your hand luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive products, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and liquids and gels in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your highest priority when choosing what to wear on board. Loose, breathable clothing is a smart choice, as are enclosed shoes like sneakers.
• The result of prolonged periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect passengers on long-haul flights. Lower your risks by staying hydrated, keeping your lower limbs moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

The trick is to be organised before you get to the security gate. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Manchester in next to no time. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a terrific start:

• Airport security personnel first need to verify that you have a valid ID and boarding pass before you can proceed any further. Have them within easy reach, ready for inspection.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
