If you plan to catch up on some sleep, a neck pillow and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones will also be useful. Finally, squeeze in a toothbrush and some deodorant to ensure you step off the plane looking and feeling fresh.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, drills, fuel and fireworks. Sports equipment like ski poles, and items that could harm passengers, such as guns and swords, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to feel as comfortable as possible. Choose shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, breathable clothing and remember to take a pullover in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by extended periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to wander around the cabin or do some simple exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

The secret is to be organised before you arrive at security. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Loon before you know it. Follow these tips and get your trip off to a spectacular start:

• Airport security personnel first need to establish that you have a valid passport and travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Keep them close by.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to beep. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
