• The result of sustained periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect some passengers on long-distance flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your lower limbs moving and wearing compression socks or tights.

As savvy travellers know, the secret is to be well organised before you reach the airport security gate. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Hope in a flash. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a terrific start:

• Have your passport and boarding pass within close reach. They're the first items you'll be asked to show at security.
