If you're poorly prepared, travelling can be overwhelming. But there's no need to hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy tips for a stress-free start to your time in Grade. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be a great experience if you bring the right gear. Firstly, you'll want some toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a good novel. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your electronic devices, chargers, any daily medications and perhaps a neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to take your passport, travel documents and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp objects, like your Swiss Army knife, and products which are explosive or flammable, such as spray paint, flares and fuels, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your main priority when deciding what to wear on board. Loose clothing is a sensible choice, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of sitting. To lessen your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks or tights and keep your feet and legs moving.

It's simple — be prepared. We've pulled together some useful tips for a fuss-free trip through airport security. Look out Grade, here you come:

• First things first. Your travel documents and ID will need to be shown to airport security personnel. Keep them handy to avoid fumbling around for them.
• Your belt, coat, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them as your turn draws near.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go through the machine to be scanned. No need to worry though, you'll be back online in no time.
• Travelling with your favourite cologne? As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, you're permitted to bring it with you in your carry-on bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a good footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when passing through security. Boots and other bulky shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
