• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of sitting. To lessen your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your legs and feet moving.

As savvy travellers know, the secret is to be prepared before you reach security. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Florence in a flash. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a flying start:

• Airport security personnel first need to check that you have a valid ID and matching boarding pass before you can proceed any further. Have them in your hand, ready for inspection.
• After that, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that might trigger the alarms. Personal belongings like your belt, jacket and headphones need to go through the machine.
