• First of all, put in your passport, important documents, bank cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some extra in-flight entertainment to while away the time. A thrilling book and a tablet crammed with your favourite shows are some fantastic options. If you intend to take a short snooze, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, leave space for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes so you'll arrive at your destination feeling fresh and ready to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Put all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hair gel in your checked luggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by authorities. Pointed or sharp objects, like your Swiss Army knife, and products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosols and strong acids, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane aren't the place for a fashion parade. Layer your clothing and choose shoes that are flat, enclosed and easy to take on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a potential risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

• Your boarding pass and travel ID will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them handy so you don't have to dig around for them.
• Your jacket, belt, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• All your electronic gadgets, including your laptop and phone, are also required to be scanned separately.
• Travelling with a new cologne? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-close bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on luggage.
• Lightweight sneakers are a good footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when passing through security. Safety boots and other heavy-style shoes are often subjected to additional screening.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
