• A plane trip can be a cruisy experience if you bring the right stuff. First of all you'll need toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a spare pair of socks and a good book. Secondly, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your laptop, a charger, any vital medications and maybe a neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, be sure to bring your passport, travel docs and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Put all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Pointed or sharp objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, flares and gasoline, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your top priority is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, breathable clothing and remember to bring a jacket in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

• Be sure to keep your ID and boarding pass within close reach. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to security.
• After that, both you and your carry-on luggage must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, remove anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Personal belongings like your coat, belt and earphones need to go through the machine.
• Your electronic gadgets like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online in no time.
• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or hand cream, that you want to bring on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), zip-lock bag.
• There's a good chance you'll be required to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
