If you're poorly prepared, travelling can be a real challenge. But don't hit the panic button just yet. Follow these useful tips for a trouble-free start to your time in Cambridge. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a pleasure if you pack the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a spare change of clothes and a magazine or two. Secondly, make room in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, medications and maybe a proper neck pillow as well. • Put all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by security. Sharp objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and dangerous goods which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and strong acids, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Choose comfort over style. Prepare for changes in temperature by layering up, and opt for flat, closed-toe footwear like sneakers.
• Caused by sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect some passengers on long-haul flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your feet and legs moving and wearing compression socks to help improve your circulation.

• Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them handy so you don't have to dig around for them.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• For just a few minutes, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your phone, tablet and any other electronic devices also need to be sent through the scanner.
