• A plane ride can be a cruisy experience if you take the right gear. First of all you'll need toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and hairbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a magazine or two. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your phone, tablet and chargers, any vital medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow as well. Lastly, and most importantly, remember to take your passport, travel docs and some money.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between air carriers, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes knives, scissors, aerosol cans and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like ice skates, and objects that could injure passengers, such as firearms and ammunition, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your main priority when deciding what to wear on board. Loose, breathable clothing is a wise choice, as are roomy, closed-toe shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some simple exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

• First things first. Your travel documents and ID will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them at hand so you don't have to dig around for them.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on bag must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that might trigger the alarms. Items such as your belt, coat and earphones need to go through the machine.
• All electronic gadgets, including your tablet and phone, must also be scanned.
• Travelling with a new hand and nail cream? No problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, you can keep it with you in your carry-on bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when passing through security. Hiking boots and other heavy-style shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
