Faro (district)

The southernmost region of Portugal showcases the very best of the country with atmospheric medieval quarters, sun-drenched lagoons and scenic sandy beaches.

At the very south of Portugal is Faro, a district in the Algarve region that encompasses a bustling metropolis as well as several barrier islands. Explore this Mediterranean paradise by strolling down the city’s pedestrianized streets, watching ships pull in and out of the marina and relaxing on sandy beaches.

Originally a Roman settlement, Faro has developed over the years into a thriving coastal region which caters to tourists looking for some sunshine as well as to the students who study at the University of Algarve. Visit the city of Faro to see the remains of the historic town, known as Cidade Velha. Marvel at the mosaic street tiles and step into a family-owned café for an authentic Portuguese lunch. For views out to the islands, climb the steps of the Sé de Faro, a cathedral that blends Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture.

For natural beauty, walk along the coastline to see the lagoons and marshlands that make up Faro’s section of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. See ducks wading in the water and be on alert to spot the rare purple gallinule bird that nests here.

Head to barrier islands such as Ilha Barreta. Search for seashells on sandy beaches, relax under palm trees or simply enjoy the peace and quiet far away from the bustle of major tourist towns and resort hubs.

Faro acts as a transportation centre for the rest of the Algarve region. Many low-cost air carriers operate routes to its international airport. Faro’s railway station is used for intercity trains as well as longer regional journeys. From the airport, take a taxi to the city of Faro to begin your travels.

For the lowest accommodation prices, be flexible when planning your trip. Faro enjoys great weather year round. Summers are warm and sunny, while winters are mild.

Come to Faro to discover why this isn’t just a gateway to the rest of Portugal, but a fascinating destination in its own right.
