European Museum of Modern Art

Realism is a somewhat surprising feature of this museum of modern art, with figurative art taking prime place among the contemporary masterpieces.

The European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) possesses a fine collection of figurative works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries. These sculptures, paintings and sketches adorn the halls of the Palau Gomis, an 18th-century palace that was nicely renovated in the early 2000s. Visit the comprehensive European Museum of Modern Art to learn about the preeminent crafters of the figurative art movement.

Find the museum along a narrow alley in the Old Town district. Admire the ornate and neoclassical interior of the palace, which divides the art exhibits across three floors. The gallery contains the works of more than 200 artists. Climb up the elegant staircase and make your way through the various movements, from art deco and Catalan sculpture to modern sculpture.

Contemporary figurative art is the specialty of the museum. This style is known to resemble and draw from real-life figures. Many of these paintings are photorealistic. Notice that the museum diverges from others of its kind by focusing on such real-life sources and aesthetics rather than more abstract forms of modern art.

Attend one of the many concerts that are set up in the museum. Tickets to classical recitals include the offering of a free drink.

Buy tickets to the European Museum of Modern Art online. There are discounts for seniors and students. Children under age 10 enter for free. The site opens Tuesday through Sunday from late morning until evening.

The European Museum of Modern Art is in the Born zone in the historic centre of Barcelona. Travel here by metro to the Jaume I stop and walk northeast for a few minutes to get to the museum. You can also ride one of the many bus lines to a nearby stop. Walk around the district to see other attractions such as the Museu Picasso de Barcelona, the Museu de la Xocolata and El Born Centre de Cultural.
