Chestnut Cottage - a charming traditional stone cottage with 2 bedrooms on Arniston Estate

  • Located on the stunning Lime Avenue drive to Arniston House Chestnut Cottage is one of 4 charming stone cottages which housed the foresters for the estate in days gone by. Set in a sunny tranquil courtyard the cottages overlook fields to the north. The cottages also have an area of peaceful garden for visitors' use. A timeless place to relax in the country yet only 30 minutes from the center of Edinburgh with all its attractions. Arniston is an ideal base for families with pets.

    Chestnut Cottage has one double or twin bedroom on the ground floor level. Upstairs is a king bedroom next to the family bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped including an electric oven and hob, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. The cosy sitting room has an open fire with logs and kindling provided free of charge by the estate woodlands. A Freeview TV, DVD player and Wi-Fi are provided to entertain you during a relaxing break.

    Ground floor: Entrance hall, sitting/dining room with open fire. Well equipped kitchen. 1 double or twin bedroom.

Lovely return visit to the wonderful Arniston Estate. Chestnut cottage is a lovely cozy and comfortable cottage in wonderful surroundings. Felt like a home. Good location for days out not that you ever need to leave the grounds! We will be back!

Perfect weekend getaway

Great cottage wonderful host

Chestnut cottage is a lovely cosy cottage with everything you need. The location on the Arniston Estate means you wake up to peace and quiet and wonderful view from the living room. Staying there was wonderful and despite its rural location is also really convenient for supplies and access to Edinburgh. I could quite easily have never left. Henrietta is a wonderful host and the cottage is a credit to the estate. I will definitely be back!

A very cozy stay

We spent a few very nice days here exploring Scotland. The proximity to Edinburgh is fantastic, but a trip to the Highlands is also easily possible. The cottage is small but nice and the fireplace in particular offers a lot of coziness. The kitchen is very well equipped and the location is very quiet overall. Thank you for the great time!

Our perfect stay at the Arniston Estate

Everything was so wonderful and perfect. It was everything that we had dreamed our stay in Scotland would be. Henrietta was so kind and helpful, she even recommended a lovely place to eat and shop! The grounds of the estate were beautiful and amazing to explore. We will definitely be returning to the estate in the future

Cute warm and cosy with a working fireplace! Lovely walks in the area and driving distance to historical sites. The place was quite clean for a pet friendly stay but there were was a few pee stains from previous doggos.

What a gem!

My husband and I had such an incredible time in this beautiful cottage! We wished we’d stayed longer and could explore more locally! The house itself was absolutely stunning, and conversations with Henrietta were so lovely and personable. We were absolutely delighted when we walked in and discovered all the lovely nuances and details. Highly recommend!!

A great stay overall.

Lovely warm house in a beautiful setting. Could do with a bit of updating. For example, the toaster didn’t work and the beds and pillows were quite lumpy. On the whole though, we had a wonderful time and would go back.

Had a thoroughly relaxing break, Henrietta extremely helpful. Our only fault if there is one is that the microwave and oven were dated, particularly the microwave, and the property would benefit from a smart tv. Comfortable beds, we all slept well and delicious eggs! Thank you.

Ok though lacking charm

The description and photos of the cottage made it appear quite charming but it was actually very ordinary. Our stay was ok, it had what we needed. We made use of a park and ride and rode the bus into Edinburgh which was convenient.

We needed a place to stay for a few days since we were having work done in our house, and found this amazing place while searching on Google. The cottage is lovely! Everything was above and beyond our expectations! The estate surrounding the cottage is wonderful, peaceful and beautiful. Despite the weather was not great we really enjoyed spending time indoors. The cottage has Everything you need to make you feel like being home. 5 stars

A comfy cottage in a wonderful location.

We had a brilliant week here at Chesnut cottage. The grounds are absolutely lovely with lots of walks and country parks located nearby. Edinburgh is just a short drive and there were lots of attractions there for my boys. The cottage itself is very comfortable and I loved cooking in the airy kitchen! Everthing we needed was available. Henrietta was extremely helpful and immediately helped me with any queries I had. Just a serene, comfortable stay.

A wonderful stay at Chestnut cottage

The cottage was a perfect base for visits to Edinburgh (train nearby in Gorebridge), Glasgow (only 1 hour drive), and other wonderful places like Rosslyn Chapel, the Pentland hills,… The cottage is really charming and cosy and provides all the comfort you need after a long day out. Only the shower is a bit basic, but it works well enough. Another plus is that the cottage is situated in the large domain of Arniston house. It is very quiet and you can take long walks on the estate. We certainly hope to go back sometime.

Nice cottage

We chose this cottage because of its authentic appearance and because it is located on a beautiful estate. In addition, it is also close to Edinburgh which we wanted to visit. You can do it by car or by train from Gorebridge. The cottage is small but nice and cosy. There is a even a nice fireplace. Furthermore, the facilities were complete for a week's stay for 4 people. The only pity was that the freezer was quite frozen over, so we could only use 1 drawer.

Like stepping back in time but in comfort

We had a very nice first visit to this part of Scotland - to visit family who have downsized! We were really glad that we found and could afford such a nice place to stay. Everything was great - really comfortable, felt like the setting for a Catherine Cookson novel! The fire was hard to keep alight with just wood - I assume this is because in the old days this fire was used for coal? But there were some lovely blankets in the downstairs (twin) bedroom that we put to good use when the heating went off (we’re night owls!). Tiny TV but the kitchen was really well equipped - even had a hand whisk!

Calm and cosy little cottage

We really enjoyed our stay at Chesnut Cottage ! Very cosy, warm, welcoming little house ! Thank you for welcoming us and our dog ! The Arniston Estate is lovely, very calm. A nice place for walks. Very dark at night, we had the chance to see plenty of stars when the sky was clear enough. The fireplace with everything needed and the bathtube were the cherry on top ! Easy to access from Edinburgh airport. The train station of Gorebridge is also a big plus. 25min by train and you're in the town center of Edinburgh ! Little detail: we struggled a bit with the electric plate. It takes too long to cook with it. It could be nice to have an induction plate instead :)

Wonderful Spot!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Chestnut Cottage. It was a wonderful spot to see some of the local treasures like Cairnpapple, Rosslyn Chapel and Edinburgh.
