This monastery was established in the 15th century on the site of an earlier bishop’s palace. Over the centuries, both the monastery and church have been added to and altered. Take particular note of the belfry this is among the more recent additions and was completed in the mid-18th century.
Visit the monastery’s gallery to see the altar painting by Tintoretto, one of the masters of the 16th-century Venetian school. This work depicts the Madonna with child and saints and is the most valuable artwork on the site. Other important artworks displayed here include ceiling frescos by Croatian Baroque painter Tripo Kokolja, which can be found under the choir. The central fresco shows the order’s patron saint and founder, St. Dominic, with angels, while the images on either side depict other saints from the order.
Find the museum’s historical collections in rooms leading off the cloisters. Exhibits here reveal details about Bol’s past. Inspect the various prehistoric items, Greek coins, paintings and icons on display. Look for the collection of robes used for mass and various manuscripts and written charters dating back as far as the 15th century.
Reserve time to stroll around the pleasant garden grounds. Standing on the rocky edge of the Glavica peninsula, the monastery overlooks a pretty beach and provides stunning views across the Adriatic Sea to the island of Hvar.
The Dominican Monastery is located on a promontory at the west end of Martinica Beach in Bol, on the south side of the island of Brač. To reach the monastery, take a short walk east from Bol town centre.
