Amazing Cabin on 15 Acres of Woods Adjacent to Custer State Park
The Laughin Place allows you to spend less of your precious family and vacation time driving and spend more of that precious time doing the things that matter. Right in the middle of it all, with easy access to highways and attractions, The Laughin' Place is a mile high, and is nearly surrounded by both the fabulous Custer State Park and the spectacular Black Hills National Forest. Both offer you easy access to hundreds and hundreds of acres of hiking, animal sighting, and exploring. So close to everything, yet so private.
Our cabin is a tri level home, very easy and comfortable. Much of it is finished in knotty pine, with a soaring slate chimney. The kitchen is updated with hickory cabinets, side by side refrigerator and glass top range. We have all the conveniences you'd expect at home. The loft looks out over the living room below, and features a door leading to its own private outdoor deck. The lower level features an impressive slate wall, a second kitchen, and walks out on to our lush yard.
Bathrooms remodeled and refreshed in 2021. Walk in showers in both bathrooms now, a nice update.
The main floor master bedroom has a king size TempurPedic bed. The loft has two twin beds and also a day bed with a trundle if you need it, a total of four twin beds. The lower bedroom has a queen size bed. The lower level den has a sofa.
Our expansive decks allow a person or two to relax with a quiet cup of coffee in the morning sun. Later on, you can watch the evening shadows fall, reliving your day with friends and family around the propane fire table.
The Laughin' Place is ideally located for your Black Hills vacation plans. Custer State Park is literally a stone's throw. Custer City is quick trip by car or an easy bike ride, coming and going. Outdoor fun abounds in every direction. Biking, hiking, fishing, kayaking, running and exploring.

Great location in The Black Hills. Easy to come and go to various activities. The owner was quick and easy to communicate with. The kids (7, 9, 11) had a grand time exploring the property and roasting marshmallows over the fire pit. I REALLY appreciated having the basics - coffee filters, tissues, foil, salt/pepper, oil. Thanks much!!!
Perfect location for our family vacation. Amazing setting! Short drive into Custer and easy to get to all the area attractions. Perfect place to have your morning coffee on the deck or take it with you on a drive through Custer State Park!
Wonderful place to stay. It was perfectly situated to where all our ventures were. Our daughter was in a wedding in Custer State park and it was a was a nice drive to and from the wedding venue. This VRBO was peaceful, quiet, and comfortable. The setting was great with all the comforts of home.
The cabin is great. Every amenity you would want. The owners are very hands on and contact you before and during stay. The location is great. It borders Custer State park and Wind Cave NP, Jewel Cave NM, Crazy Horse memorial and Mt Rushmore are a short drive.
Perfect access to the fabulous Black Hills North to South. Every attraction and visitor destination with in 90 minutes.
Great home within 10 minutes of Custer. All you need for your vacation home away from home.

It couldn't have been more perfect!! And the owners were extremely helpful and so good natured about answering all my questions. The cabin (house) was stunning, easy to find, and just everything we were hoping for. LOVED IT
We had a great time visiting SD for the first time, and this location was perfect. We enjoyed the large yard, deck, the three floors inside worked out great for teens in the loft, parents on the main floor, and we took the basement. The space for the provided hammocks and cornhole were a bonus! Thanks you!
This property managed to WOW 3 generations of our family (including 2 initially resistant teens). THEN, we explored all the amazingly close lakes, mountains, trails, wildlife, towns, and historic Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.
Thank you for blessing our family with your incredible vacation home!
Couldn’t be more conveniently located for morning and evening wildlife cruises in Custer State Park. Stargazing decks. Minimal traffic, well stocked, large and tasteful home. Friendly Custer City just the right distance away and real history, not the boring kind.
The home did live up to its name The Amazing Cabin. We arrived and everything was as described in the listing. The house was clean and well stocked. It was centrally located to all the things we wanted to do and see. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake, the Wildlife Loop and many more. The owners were helpful with any and all of our questions. My wife and I had a great time and would recommend this home.
Beautiful home in the perfect location for exploring the Black Hills!
We had a great time and enjoyed the area. Location is close to all of the Black Hills attraction. The hosts made sure we had everything we would need for our stay.
We realized on the road home that we had left an item behind. We let Brett and Lori know and they found the item and made sure it made its way back to us.
Thank you for a great stay!
We always stay in the Custer area and this cabin will not disappoint. After a busy day riding the motorcycle we couldn’t believe how peaceful the surroundings were. The owners were easy to communicate with even though we really didn’t need to. Everything was explained as shown. Disappointed we couldn’t build a fire but the outside gas fire table worked great. This cabin would be great for families.
Wonderful property. We had a friendly deer visit every morning which made by 5yr olds day. Enough space for the other couple to have their privacy. So many extras included that we didn't know. Only thing I wish was they had was a highchair for my infant so I didn't have to haul mine all the way there. Literally right across from Custer State Park boundaries. Take the back gravels to see so many wild things. Such a beautiful place. We will be back!
Our family loved it here. This place is so perfect as it is super secluded (literally surrounded by nature) yet so close to town. We saw so many deer on the property and the kids loved exploring the rocks. The actual house was so much nicer than the pictures give credit. My three boys stayed in the loft and there was so much room. We barely even used the lower level. The location of the property was super central to all the things we wanted to do.. explore the national parks, ATV, Mount Rushmore, boating Pactola. Custer was our favorite town. It’s less touristy and had some great shops and restaurants. Beggin Burro, Custer Beacon and Baker’s Bakery were our favorite . Horatio’s Ice Cream parlor is also delicious. The owner was super responsive, checked in with us and gave some recommendations.

Great Location, but Communication with Property Owner was unpleasant
My husband, family, and friends enjoyed ourselves greatly until the very end. The location of this property was a perfect get-a-away. We spent most of our time outdoors, however, our children enjoyed playing games and spending time with family on the property. We started noticing items such as appliances such as the washing machine and coffee machine were broken. Then, we discovered under the blankets on the banister- every single column was not connected to the main banister. They easily fell apart after the blankets were removed by our children. Several attempts were made to reconnect the falling columns, but it was not something I felt I needed to fix. This could have been a dangerous situation if we had a toddler traveling with us. I contacted the owner about the broken appliances and the columns, but the owner later accused me of breaking his staircase after we left and were driving back to our home. I am horrified by the way the owner treated me and after I was trying to establish a positive relationship with hopes of staying again. I do not recommend this property-- not because of his home, even though he should have disclosed his items were broken, especially the staircase. I have saved the text messages and would be happy to share the poor exchanges between myself and the property owner.
