Fonte Vecchia Medieval Farmhouse for 8 Guests with lovely Private Pool

Fonte Vecchia is the name of this rebuilt medieval farmhouse. Parts of the house are believed to date back to the XIVth century when it was probably a watchtower guarding the valley below and the frontier between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States. The two were frequently at war. Before that the Romans occupied the area. It was near here that the Roman Empire suffered its single greatest military defeat when Hannibal wiped out the Roman legions during a daylong battle near Tuoro on nearby Lake Trasimeno.

Enchanting, secluded old Tuscan farmhouse with breath-taking views of hilltop villages, the Niccone valley and the distant Abbruzzi mountains, restored to a high standard of luxury whilst retaining the traditional features. Located 20 minutes from the Etruscan hilltop town of Cortona. A watchtower forms part of the building, a reminder of the often tense relations between the Grand Duchy and the Pope.

The main house has four bedrooms (all doubles and all with their own bathrooms), plus a study in the tower, a kitchen, pantry, two living room, a dining room and an entrance hall with a guest toilet. Below there is a changing room and bathroom and a fenced swimming pool in the gardens.

Inside the feeling is of simple elegance with country furniture, comfortable sofas with soft-toned fabrics and kilims spread over the terracotta floors of the arched double living rooms. The thick colour-washed walls and louvred shutters ensure this spacious house, 550 metres above sea level, remains cool in summer. The four bedrooms, all upstairs, have en-suite bathrooms and variable speed ceiling fans. Maid service, three hours a day, is included six days a week. The house is set in 7 acres of olive groves. Around the house there is a mature garden full of Mediterranean plants - lavender, rosemary, sage, broom, roses, bay leaf and climbers like wisteria, evergreen jasmin and honeysuckle. Cypresses and pine trees along with oak and lime complete the setting. Apart from fig trees dotted around the property, which is fenced in, there are greengage, cherry, apple and apricot trees on the sloping orchard and a vegetable garden. There is a covered terrace with barbecue overlooking the pool (perfect for lunch and dinner) and a large table with two patio umbrellas at the front (great for breakfast).

The 5x10 metre pool, with a depth ranging from 1.0 m to 2.2 m, has steps on one side leading into the water. Eight sun loungers and three large umbrellas plus tables surround the pool as well as a swing. There is a heat retaining cover for the nights. An optional child-proof fence is stored in the pool house when not required. The nearby village of Mercatale di Cortona has a baker, butcher, post office, two small supermarkets, two banks with ATM’s, and a petrol station as well as a friendly family restaurant, Trattoria da Mimi. Her son rents the tennis court there and offers lessons. Lake Trasimeno, 20 minutes away, offers safe swimming on a sandy beach with umbrellas. There is a regular ferry service to the small Isola Maggiore, which boasts a charming lake-side restaurant, and to Isola Polvese, a nature reserve, also with a restaurant.

A barbecue is provided and kept on the covered terrace.

Marvelous
The photos barely do the place justice. We had a wonderful stay with 7 adults with more than enough space to share. The views and the landscaping were gorgeous and the house has everything you could ever need. The housekeeper Simona kept everything in perfect order and our personal highlight were the in-home dinner services. We could not have wished for a better stay. Thank you very much

WONDERFUL
What can I say. It was if the owners invited us into their home and left it us to enjoy it. It is made for entertaining, two kitchens, two dishwashers, two living rooms and multiple gardens. The setting, the house, the property, the views, the pool, the landscaping all make this a special and beautiful place. One almost didn't need to go to Cortona, Sienna, Florence, Montepulciano and Assisi but rather just hang here ... takin trains from Cortona was big plus as well ...

Sweetest Stay in Umbria
We truly loved Peter's home in Umbria. The views are amazing the house definitely feels like a home. Very comfortable, everyy you could need. We loved opening the shutters and enjoying the fresh air and sounds of nature everyday. Simona the housekeeper is fabulous. And we.took advantage of having the ladies cook for us one.night and it was one of our favorite meals. Also, Ristorante di Nonna down the street in Umbertide is a MUST..

Once you arrive you’ll never want to leave.
Fonte Vecchia is a beautiful and comfortable villa with everything we needed for 7 adults to dig in to Tuscany/Umbria. We did morning yoga overlooking the fog-filled valley, took day trips near and far, enjoyed the pool (chilly in mid-October), had cocktail hours with a view on the terrace, cozy cocktail hours by the fireplace, dinners prepared by Pamina around the large round table. There was enough room for people to work and to relax and to enjoy being together. The long uphill drive influenced staying in for the night and enjoying the sky full of stars.

Wonderful retreat
The Fonte Vecchia was a perfect house for our group. The house was equipped with everything we needed and Simona took wonderful care of us and the house. We spent many hours enjoying the view of the valley and mountains with a glass of wine in hand. The house is very private and very quiet yet convenient to many local shops and restaurants in the valley and nearby towns.

A Perfect Stay at a Perfect Villa
We are three American couples who travel together often. With much investigation I found Fonte Vecchia on VRBO. If I could imagine an ideal Villa this would be it. Plenty of room, wonderful views, very well cared for. But the thing that made it special were the people. The owner called us from Belgium to assure that we were satisfied with the accommodations and to recommend restaurants. Our cleaning lady, Simona, was attentive and helped with many things. However, at the top of our list was the property manager, Caroline Sampson. She is a very busy person, but if you are lucky enough for her to be available, she made a wonderful driver. She was not intrusive, but always there when we needed her. Our plans often changed and she always said, “no problem “. I had made many plans for tours, but often our group just wanted to stay at the Villa because it was so beautiful and comfortable. We arranged for four dinners at the Villa and they were wonderful. I cannot think of anything negative to say about this truly wonderful Villa. Only one point of caution. This was my first time to use VRBO, and I was very cautious. I checked out the address on Apple Maps and Google maps and the address came up as a store in Mercatale. I can assure you the GPS is wrong and this wonderful Villa is just as shown on the VRBO site. It was perfect!

Fabulous place
Beautiful house, nicely decorated, great views, great location. Possibly a few things are a bit worn and could do with updating however this did not affect our enjoyment. Simona was lovely.

Under the Tuscan Sun Retreat
After 21 months of pandemic and no travel for us U.S. residents, we were finally permitted into Italy and owners Peter & Chiqui welcomed us into their villa at check-in. What a warm welcome and thorough tour and intro to the property. It was heartening to see that the photos posted are accurate as the property is all that we dreamed of and more. Simona, the housekeeper kept the property immaculate and was a delight to chat with. She could not have been any more accommodating. We engaged her to cook several dinners for us, which rivalled the area restaurants. What a joy to partake of authentic local fare. Being the property was centrally located, we went east, west, south to sightsee in all the towns we favored, yet planned "villa days" to enjoy the quiet property and local community. Our trip was the relief that we needed from these challenging times. Thank you, Peter and Chiqui!

Wonderful experience! We felt like we went back in time.
You actually feel at home the minute you arrive. Simona the housekeeper took wonderful care of the home and us every day. Her special prepared meal for an anniversary dinner was amazing. Pool time was the best. In the summer heat, it was a great escape. Thanks to Peter for making it possible for us to enjoy your beautiful home.
