Inspired by French and Italian opera houses, this grand 1908 concert hall has some of the best sound in the world.

See a show or take a guided tour at the Teatro Colón, one of the finest theatres in the world. Home to the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, Teatro Colón features classical music, opera and ballet performances throughout the year. Seats at a performance are not only for wealthy Buenos Aires residents: look into the theatre’s budget tickets to get cheap, last-minute tickets for a world-class show.

Catch a performance for the best way to experience the hall. The season runs from March until December, and some of its most renowned shows are the opera Carmen and the ballet Don Quixote. Get to the theatre early to admire the massive hall, which opened in 1908. Teatro Colón seats 2,500, and its acoustics are considered some of the best in the world. Look up at the ceiling to see an ornate fresco by French painter Marcel Jambon.

If you are visiting in the off-season or you do not have time to see a show, join a guided tour of the theatre. You will learn the involved story behind the theatre’s construction as you tour through its luxurious interior. Stained-glass windows, grand chandeliers and fresco paintings grace the Golden Hall and the lobby.

Sit in the Plaza Estado del Vaticano, the grassy square next to the theatre. During performances, a huge screen is put up so you can watch the performance for free as you sit on the lawn.

Due to its location along the central 9 de Julio Avenue, Teatro Colón is easily accessible by metro or bus. The hop-on, hop-off tourist bus also makes a stop near the theatre.

Teatro Colón offers both budget tickets and free events. Purchase a place in the standing area at the back of the hall for the best deal. Otherwise, check the website for information on upcoming free events. Tickets for free shows are only available at the box office on a first-come, first-served basis, so you may need to wait in line for a few hours to secure one.
