About this property
Romantic Luxury Forest Hideaway with Four Poster Bed & Woodland Walks
A romantic luxury hideaway nestled between Newland and Clearwell, with breathtaking Forest of Dean views. Explore woodland trails from the doorstep, stroll to cosy country pubs with roaring fires, then return for a hot power shower, Prosecco beside the glowing fire and a night in the beautiful antique king-size four-poster bed. Puzzlewood, Clearwell Caves & the River Wye are just minutes away.Set in an elevated countryside position between the picturesque villages of Newland and Clearwell, The Hideaway is a beautifully renovated, self-contained retreat created with couples in mind.
The Space
Calming forest-inspired interiors, rich natural tones and thoughtful finishing touches give the property a warm boutique feel, while the beautiful king-size antique four-poster bed creates a wonderfully romantic place to retreat at the end of the day. The Hideaway is particularly special during autumn and winter. Spend the day walking beneath the spectacular gold and copper colours of the Forest, exploring on a crisp frosty morning or discovering one of the nearby villages, then come home, kick off your walking boots and enjoy a wonderfully hot, powerful shower. Pour a glass of wine, switch on the electric wood-burner-style fire and settle into the lounge while its warm glow makes those darker evenings feel wonderfully cosy.
In spring and summer, life moves outside. Enjoy a morning coffee in the sun room, relax on the elevated deck and take in the stunning views of the forest, light the BBQ or finish the evening beside the fire pit beneath the stars.
Eat, drink & explore on foot
One of the real pleasures of staying at The Hideaway is being surrounded by countryside while having some fantastic places to eat and drink just over a mile away.
For walkers, several can be reached on foot:
The Butchers Arms, Clearwell – approx. 1.1 miles One of my personal favourites. A wonderful traditional gastropub with excellent food, a pub garden in warmer weather and roaring fires on cold winter evenings.
The Ostrich Inn, Newland – just over 1 mile A beautiful centuries-old country pub beside All Saints Church, known as the “Cathedral of the Forest.” Walk through the countryside or take the atmospheric historic Burial Path through the woodland.
Tudor Farmhouse, Clearwell – just over 1 mile A beautiful country hotel and restaurant offering refined seasonal dining — perfect for a romantic dinner or special occasion.
Simply Wild, Coleford – approx. 1.3 miles For a special evening, this award-winning fine-dining restaurant currently holds 3 AA Rosettes, with beautifully presented seasonal food, tasting menus and à la carte dining.
The Art of Coffee, Coleford – approx. 1.3 miles A lovely independent café and a perfect destination for a morning walk followed by excellent coffee, breakfast or cake.
Walking routes vary between quiet country lanes, bridleways and woodland paths, so suitable footwear is recommended for the off-road routes. If you would like walking directions, just ask — I’m always happy to help.
Countryside without being cut off
Although The Hideaway feels peaceful and rural, Coleford is only around a two-minute drive away, making it easy to pop out for groceries or anything you need during your stay. You'll find supermarkets, independent shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as a local cinema — perfect for a relaxed evening or a rainy winter afternoon. It means you can enjoy the peace and beauty of a countryside escape without having to drive miles every time you fancy a coffee, meal out or need to pick up supplies.
Cook, relax & make yourself at home
The spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area includes a fully equipped modern kitchen, giving you everything you need for a comfortable stay. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading into the Forest, cook dinner together in the evening or come back from a chilly walk to something warm and comforting.
Guests are welcomed with complimentary Prosecco, tea and coffee, bread, butter and milk, along with thoughtful arrival touches to help you settle in and start enjoying your break from the moment you arrive. The cosy lounge has comfortable seating and the warming electric wood-burner-style fire, while the bathroom's powerful hot shower is particularly welcome after a long woodland walk or muddy day on the bikes.
And when the day is over, climb into the beautiful king-size four-poster bed and enjoy the peace of the countryside. There is also a comfortable double sofa bed in the lounge, suitable for a child or occasional additional guest. Please note that The Hideaway only has one bathroom.
Step straight into the Forest
For walkers, cyclists and outdoor lovers, the location is hard to beat.
Forest and countryside walks begin almost from the doorstep, with each season bringing something different — fresh spring woodland, long summer days, spectacular autumn colour and crisp, frosty winter mornings. Informal woodland mountain-biking trails can be accessed approximately half a mile away, leading deeper into the Forest and towards the River Wye and Wye Valley. The renowned Verderers Trail, Freeminers Trail and Pedalabikeaway Cycle Centre are also within easy reach, with everything from scenic woodland cycling to technical mountain-bike and downhill trails.
Guests bringing bikes have use of secure locked bike storage at The Hideaway.
So much to discover nearby
Puzzlewood, with its extraordinary ancient woodland and connections to productions including Star Wars and Harry Potter, and the fascinating Clearwell Caves are just two miles away. A short drive brings you to Symonds Yat and the River Wye, with breathtaking viewpoints, riverside walks, wildlife spotting and, during the warmer months, canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding. Golf lovers will also appreciate nearby Forest Hills Golf Club.
Whether you want to fill every day with adventures or barely leave The Hideaway at all, you can make your break exactly what you want it to be.

Please note
Due to The Hideaway's elevated position, access involves steps from the parking area and may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. The Hideaway is a private, self-contained annexe attached to the main house at Kennel Farm. It has its own private entrance and accommodation exclusively for guests.
Access is through the grounds of Kennel Farm and involves walking past part of the main house to reach your private entrance. Once inside, The Hideaway is entirely your own private space.
The garden is shared.
Dogs are very welcome at The Hideaway by prior arrangement. We know the Forest of Dean is a wonderful place to explore with a four-legged companion, with beautiful woodland and countryside walks right from the doorstep. We have two friendly retired racing rescue greyhounds who live with us in the main house, so we simply coordinate use of the shared garden to make sure everyone is comfortable. The garden is secure for our greyhounds, but there are some small gaps beneath sections of the hedging that a smaller dog could potentially squeeze through, so visiting dogs should be supervised while outside.
We welcome one well-behaved dog with a £35 pet fee. We kindly ask that dogs are not left unattended, are kept off the beds and furniture, and that muddy paws are wiped before coming inside. If you're bringing a dog, please contact me before booking to let me know their breed and approximate size so I can make sure everything is suitable for your stay. 🐾
