About this property
Castle Gatehouse - a sudeley castle cottage that sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms
Booking the Castle Gatehouse is akin to booking your very own miniature castle for your stay at Sudeley! The former gatekeeper's house marks the entrance to the castle grounds and has been converted and restored to provide comfortable accommodation for up to four guests over its unique layout. Its ancient and impressive structure is complemented with symmetrical gardens lined with iron railings and a stone courtyard in the centre.
The accommodation is arranged such that Bedroom One, with its four-poster bed and en-suite shower room, is accessed via a separate door, in one wing of the Gatehouse. Across the courtyard is another door, leading into a well-equipped kitchen with a dining table and chairs for four guests, a utility area with stairs leading up to a beautifully furnished, cosy living area and additional separate WC just off the landing. A further seven steps will take you to Bedroom Two, a spacious room with a king-size double bed. A few steps down will lead you to the en-suite shower room, with a concealed washing machine and tumble dryer.
Outside, guests can admire the pastoral views that line the driveway to the castle from two individually gated gardens, a mirror image of each other, neatly connected by a shared patio in the middle with an outdoor dining table and chairs.
Ground Floor Please note, as per the floor plan, the bedrooms have separate entrances across a courtyard and are not joined.
Bedroom One & En-Suite Shower Room: To your left when facing the Castle Gatehouse is a door into Bedroom One, a sumptuous four-poster bedroom with a decorative fireplace, wardrobe and shelves, bedside tables and its own private en-suite shower room with walk-in shower, WC and washbasin.
Head across the courtyard and enter through the opposite door into the:
Kitchen: A thoughtfully laid-out and well-equipped kitchen, featuring a dining table and chairs for 4 people, toaster, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, oven and 4 ring electric hobs, microwave and dishwasher.
Utility: The practical utility area off the kitchen under the stairs is where you'll find a large free standing fridge/freezer, high chair and stairgate, a floor mop, cushions for the outdoor chairs and even a spare dog bowl and blanket should you need it. Note: the washing machine and tumble dryer are upstairs in the en-suite bathroom.
First Floor W.C: Separate WC and washbasin.
Living Room: A beautifully furnished, cosy living room, decorated in rich tones of red, navy blue, black and gold. Relax in front of the flatscreen television and DVD player, surrounded by interesting antique features, such as the beautiful feature tapestry that adorns the wall.
Bedroom Two: A bright room in the arch of the gatehouse, featuring painted beams, a comfortable king-size bed, a full-length mirror, storage ottomans and bedside tables.
En-Suite Shower Room: En-suite with wooden floors, large walk-in power shower WC, washbasin, heated towel rail, wardrobe with storage cupboard above. There is also a washing machine and tumble dryer in a concealed cupboard.
Outside The gatehouse benefits from two small, symmetrical, gardens with a wooden table and chairs for four guests, with retractable parasol, in the courtyard patio area that separates the gardens. Please note: although dogs are accepted at the Castle Gatehouse, the gardens are not secure for them. Therefore, all dogs must be kept on a lead at all times when outside.

Absolutely stunning place ! The walk on the caste grounds is great, Winchcombe is a lovely village. Plenty of sightseeing at the Cotswolds. We will be revisiting this accommodation.

Lovely unique accommodation
The Gatehouse was perfect for our stay. With one bedroom with en-suite on the ground floor it made it easy for our elderly parents to enjoy the place and surroundings. So long as whomever uses the second bedroom and bathroom can navigate narrow stairs, some without hand rails, this is a fantastically placed accommodation for exploring the Cotswolds and nearby attractions, especially Sudeley Castle.
2 bedrooms and bathrooms, very well appointed.
A lovely area.

A special place
Brilliant location within easy walking distance of the castle and village. Toiletries provided and plenty of towels and a nice welcome pack of essentials like milk, teabags etc. The gatehouse was spotlessly clean and provided a comfortable stay.

The castle gatehouse
We stayed at the property for two nights . What a stunning building the gatehouse is .
It feels very private and we had glorious weather so could enjoy the outside space .
The beds in particular are super comfortable.
It’s a perfect base for the castle and gardens .also great for the town of Winchcombe . The property staff were also very helpful .

Stay at Castle Gatehouse
Wonderful stay in the Castle Gatehouse over Easter, celebrating my 60th Birthday with friends. Four of us stayed, beds were comfortable, great location, we enjoyed our free visit to the Castle & Gardens which are well worth a visit. Walking distance to some nice pubs in Winchcombe, and enjoyed some lovely walks around the surrounding area.
During our stay we had a problem with one of the smoke alarms, we called the number provided and maintenance visited with half an hour, most impressed.

Such an unusual property!
We spent a lovely two nights at the Castle Gatehouse. It’s such an unusual property and so close to Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle, yet in quiet isolation.
Absolutely everything you could wish for is provided at the Gatehouse and the inclusion of free admission to the Castle is a bonus. It’s a beautiful place to visit and just along a path that leads directly from the Gatehouse.

Highly recommend
We had a perfect short stay here without a car. A short walk into town for groceries, meals out and shopping, plus beautiful country to walk in, the castle, and gardens direct from your front door. We were there in the off-season so fewer tourists and lots of lambs—perfect! Clever, quirky, architectural conversion and wonderfully hot water for showers.
There are several steep staircases in this particular conversion, so I wouldn’t recommend it for people that might challenge, but I would for everyone else. We loved our stay.

Great Location
The Gatehouse is in the perfect location to enjoy both walks from the door and a stroll in to Winchcombe. The grounds of the castle are a mecca for dog walkers so if you bring dogs, they will have plenty of company! We stayed for four nights, a short winter break. The Gatehouse was very warm and had everything we needed. There was only two of us so the space worked well, it would be a little tight with four people. The shower cubicle was host to some mould, it could do with a deep clean. We didn't use the second bedroom so can't comment on that.

A knight at the castle.
Our three day stay at the Gatehouse was exactly as we had hoped it would be. A great location with nature all around but the village amenities just 5 minutes walk away.
The castle itself is both beautiful and historically significant, having been the resting place of Katherine Parr and home to monarchs and kingmakers.
The rooms are cosy - it’s a gatehouse, not a chateau, so don’t expect to have acres of space. That doesn’t detract from the charm of the place and for one or two couples it’s something very different to the cottage let you would normally see.
Very highly recommended.

Magical stay in extraordinary caste gatehouse
If you have the opportunity to book a stay in this historic castle gatehouse, do not hesitate. The property has all the modern comforts including two spacious bathrooms and a full-sized clothes washer and dryer. Perfect for two couples or a family with older children (since the two bedrooms are in separate parts of the gatehouse). It’s a 5-minute walk into the charming town with several good pubs and restaurants. Make sure to save a day to explore Sudeley castle and its gardens. It is spectacular and packed with history. Admission is free with your stay, but we recommend the inexpensive 30-minute tour provided by one of their excellent guides. Don’t miss a chance to stay in this extraordinary property!

It was a dream come true
This is a magical venue and I loved it.
The cleanliness of the unit was a bit of a dissapointment, dead insects in the cutlery draw and over the floor, a genral layer of dust. The bathrooms were sparkling clean.
The four poster was one of the reasons for booking so quite dissapointed that the bed had been broken and it was only a two poster. The mattresses were the hardest I've ever slept on.
Everything else was super.

Beautiful with a lot of Stairs
The Sudeley Castle Gatehouse is a beautiful building from the outside, but not the most practical place to stay ...unless you like a lot of stairs, and are happy with one of the two bedrooms (with Ensuite), being located outside the main residence. The Kitchen is pleasant. Beds are comfortable if you like a firm mattress.
The upstairs shower had very noticeable mould as did the washing machine. There are 6 or 7 steps from the main Bedroom (over the archway) down each side to either the Ensuite/ Robe/ EuroLaundry on one side, or the Sitting Room on the other. Then the usual winding staircase down to the ground level. Being a very old structure, only two tiny windows upstairs were able to be opened making it a bit stuffy in the Bedroom.
Great location with short walk to Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle.

Castle Gatehouse
Generally we liked the property, it had everything we needed for our stay and the location is excellent.
The wifi was very poor and needs to be improved. The property had a lot of lady birds crawling everywhere, during our 3 night stay i gathered 25 lady birds and put them outside. Both bedrooms are a great size with excellent ensuites.
I think the website should make it clearer that one of the bedrooms has a different entrance to the rest of the property, ie it is completely separate so it wouldn't be suitable for 2 adults plus 2 children.

Great location, well equipped accommodation
Great location for exploring Sudeley Castle and the surrounding area. Very well equipped kitchen and furniture. High quality finishes throughout. Loved the outside space and the welcome pack. Duvets, bed linen and towels should be upgraded to meet this standard of rental. Loo seat needs tightening in one of the bathrooms. Lots of cobwebs in the larger bathroom. Hooks for hanging dressing gowns would be appreciated and a soap dish for the shower. Limited hangers for a 3 night stay. Very informative guidebook but the username for the internet is incorrect. Otherwise a great stay and would recommend to others.

Spring 2024
The gatehouse was a lovely location, the accommodation suited us as two couples we enjoyed visiting local sites of interest especially the castle and the steam railway in Winchcombe. We would recommend the Indian restaurant in Winchcombe and had a nice meal in the Pheasant pub in toddington.
We would like to make a few polite recommendations, There was an ant problem in the kitchen side of the building which we reported and was told it would be sorted out. Wooden flooring in kitchen not fixed down(trip hazard) and damp coming through above window in front room needs looking at urgently.
Helpful recommendations hooks in downstairs bathroom/ second frying pan/ bed linen refreshed.

Room for improvement
Enjoyed visiting Sudeley Castle and Gardens several times without charge.
As far as the Gatehouse is concerned there is room for improvement:
No bedside-lights within easy reach in the bedroom (1 st floor). One bulb in a table lamp in the living room was missing.
Shower on the ground floor did not provide cold water.
Heating not working properly.
Mould at a window lintel (living room).
Stains on the bed linen.

Beautiful Location, Tired Accommodation
The CastleGate is set in the stunning grounds of Sudeley Castle, the location on the edge of the estate with a short walk into the castle is perfect. The Gatehouse is an atmospheric and unique building.
However the Gatehouse building itself needs some work, the layout was clever and views wonderful but the furniture was tired and the whole apartment needed painting, the bathroom had no bath though there was plenty of space for one. The heating in the downstairs bedroom was not working properly, we followed the instructions left but could not get it to work without boosting it in the night. There was limited storage for clothes as a large piece of furniture was in the wardrobe. There was no where to place showergel or accessories in the shower.
We had a wonderful stay but in terms of value for money would expect the above.

Unforgettable Stay
We truly enjoyed our stay at Sudeley Castle Gatehouse. it was a once in a lifetime experience staying in the Gatehouse. It is well appointed and has all the comforts of home while being one of a kind. It’s located alongside a beautiful path to the Sudeley Castle itself, which is only a short 5-10 minute walk away. The pasture next door has sheep grazing and overall the location is charming and peaceful.
So many nice touches and conveniences…separate washer and dryer, a fresh pint of milk left sealed for us in the fridge for morning coffee, the courtyard with table and chairs (only 3 and would have been nice to have 4 chairs), the modern kitchen amenities, the private gated drive and property, dog friendly (even though we didn’t have our dog with us), 2 1/2 bathrooms, the 2 binders left with info: one with user manuals and one with area sites, restaurants, maps, etc., and free entry to tour the beautiful Sudeley Castle and many more.
Potential improvements are few…adding hooks in the bathroom for towels, wish the gatehouse was a single unit to be more family friendly for traveling with kids, rather than requiring separate keyed-entry for the bedroom and bathroom on the left, and a welcome tray of fruit ;)

Lovely Autumn stay at the Castle Gatehouse
We have just returned from a week's stay at the Castle Gatehouse. We were a party of 4 adults and 2 dogs. The property is situated in a superb location on the edge of Winchcombe, and we were able to enjoy long walks straight from our door out into the surrounding countryside every day. We found the property to be reasonably well equipped, although the kitchen/dining area was quite small and it felt as if with four adults and two dogs we were all on top of each other, especially as there wasn't much room to put wet boots, coats, dog towels etc upon returning from our walks. A few hooks by the door to hang things would perhaps be useful! The lounge upstairs was again small, although not a problem, however the sofa and armchairs we found to be quite uncomfortable if sitting for any length of time. The main bedroom was generously sized, as was the ensuite bathroom, however the bed itself was a little on the uncomfortable side also. However, none of these minor issues detracted from what was an enjoyable week in a great location.

The Gatehouse worked well for our party of two (unrelated) couples.
We all enjoyed staying at the Gatehouse very much. One couple had a kitchen and a sitting room as well as an ensuite bathroom, while the other had a bedroom and an ensuite bathroom. We are very old friends and this worked for us; it would also work well for a family.
The Gateway was very clean with ample towels of a good quality and a well stocked kitchen. The sitting room was a bit snug, but very comfortable.
We loved the setting of the Gatehouse and, being semi city folk, we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The complimentary entrance to the Castle was very welcome. My husband and I volunteer in a house in Twickenham and we enjoyed exploring the links between the two properties.
There were a couple of 'niggles'. First the beds were rather hard and the pillows were very flat. The ensuite bathroom in the larger half of the Gatehouse was accessed by stairs with no handrail. My friends reported that it felt very unsafe in the middle of the night.
They also reported that the shower controls were temperamental.

Perfection is a place
A wonderfully atmospheric place in a beautiful part of the country, sympathetically modernised while retaining its character.
It was so lovely to stay on the castle grounds, giving us the ability to walk the beautiful property whenever we wanted. The gatehouse was cosy. There were nice welcoming items like tea and hot chocolate.
