Venture to this country house, which served as the summer house of famous independence leader Simon Bolivar, to learn about his life and stroll the picturesque gardens.

Find the Casa Museo Quinta de Bolívar in the foothills of the scenic Monserrate mountain. This country house once belonged to Simón Bolívar, a pivotal figure and military leader in the Latin American struggle for independence. Visit today to find a museum that preserves artefacts from his life and then stroll the pretty garden outside.

This historic dwelling was built in the 17th century. It was given to Simón Bolívar by Colombia’s independent government in honour of his contribution to the Latin American struggle. Between 1820 and 1830, Bolivar frequented the house as a summer residence. Since then it has been used as a brewery, hospital and school.

Imagine the life of Bolivar in rooms that have remained true to their original décor. The walls are dotted with portraits of Bolívar and his lover, Manuela Sáenz. Spot Bolívar’s authentic desk, uniform and sword in the master bedroom. Browse the humble bedroom of Bolívar’s servant, José Palacios, before heading to the dining hall. The antique furniture and tableware was once used to entertain Bolivar's guests and celebrate his triumphs.

Stroll the garden outside and enjoy scenes of cherry and walnut trees. Stop by the Plaza de Banderas and count out the flags of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia, whose independences are owed to Bolívar. The Plaza de Armas is home to an impressive artillery collection. Repeat visitors can enjoy different temporary exhibits, including displays of weaponry and tableware. After learning about the American liberators, capture the panoramic view of Monserrate mountain from the lookout deck.

Get to the Casa Museo Quinta de Bolívar by bus or walk there Plaza de Bolívar. The trip takes 30 minutes on foot. The museum is open daily except for Mondays. English-speaking tours are run on Wednesdays. Opening hours and admission fees can be found on the museum's official website.
