White Lion Royal Hotel

6/10 Okay

"Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was on the top (3rd floor) and right at the end of a corridor so was very quiet. However, if I was to stay again I would probably ask for a room on a lower floor due to needing to carry all the bags upstairs. The rooms were clean and well-presented with fresh bedding and towels and there had been some refurbishment to the bathroom and room however I would suggest that the hotel uses mattress protectors to keep the mattresses fresh. The complimentary refreshment tray was well stocked with Welsh Brew, water and biscuits. We were also lucky to get a space on the car park at the rear of the hotel which was a bonus. We didn’t stay for breakfast as we ate in the bar the night before and were disappointed at the quality of the food served. If you are looking for an overnight stay in Bala then I would not hesitate to stop here but would look elsewhere for longer stays."

"This is by far the worst hotel I have booked in all my years of travel and is to be avoided by anyone thinking of staying. The pictures on the website are of the hotel 5+ years ago when it actually looked that way. On arrival the place looked derelict, the grounds are overgrown and scattered with rubbish. The outside walls have huge chunks of plaster missing and exposing brickwork. Immediately I contacted Expedia for a refund. They then tried calling the hotel the request it back on the photo graphs I sent over in the support chat. The person who I presume was manning the entrance didn’t even pick up the phone. I then knocked the door and told him Expedia were trying to contact the hotel and he just called someone on a mobile and said I need to speak to them. At this stage the phone was ringing again and he still didn’t answer. The person on the phone told me their customer service would action the e-mail the following day and hung up. The inside was dirty and run down, empty beer cans in the table in what I presume was a lounge area. I then left and found another hotel. After this I found a local news article which highlighted the poor state of the hotel and that trading standards had been to the property due to the volume of customer complaints. This place is absolutely diabolical."

"Stayed 1st - 3rd of June. Absolutely amazing stay for our mini moon. The staff, the food, the room were all incredible. We can't wait to come back, so much so we have already pre booked a suite for our one year anniversary May 2027. Very relaxing stay just what we needed after a manic wedding weekend. The staff can't do enough for you, nothing is to much. We stayed in 222 unfortunately the ghostly activity didn't live up to other people reviews or maybe it just isn't haunted 😊 Old castle with great character but definitely no ghosts just the morning wake up call from the peacocks which we loved no complaints there. Thank you for a great stay and we can't wait to come back. 😊"

"The room was bright and clean and looked recently refurbished. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was fine except the shower wasn't powerful if you used the handheld head. However the fixed shower head was stronger if you didn't mind getting your hair wet! What really stood out for me was the staff, especially the two brothers who worked there. They were customer friendly and engaging with smiles that lit up a room! A real credit to the hotel and a great asset. Many thanks to them for a lovely stay."
