Great stay at the beach
After a busy week touring Monteverde and Arenal, our stay at this house on Playa Negra was a much needed restful few days at the beach. Loved the proximity to the beach to pop over the street when we wanted as well as the relaxing sounds of the waves and ocean from the expansive balcony and all the delicious restaurants nearby. House was clean, beautifully furnished and well set up with everything we needed, even a few beach chairs and boogie boards and noodles. Only thing I hadn’t truly focused on when booking is the ground level bathroom and bedroom with exterior kitchenette is its own separate unit which requires you to take the exterior stairs to get up to the rest of the house. These are still within the gated garden but nevertheless we ended up having my husband sleep with our 10 and 13 year old down on that level as it seemed too isolated for them if they needed us during the night and I stayed upstairs with our older teen. There were plenty of beds to make that work. We hope to be back to explore more of that area. All the beaches were amazing as well as nearby Cahuita National Park.

Although we were one couple, the property offered plenty of space for three couples. We opted for one of the upstairs bedrooms as it was convenient for the main kitchen. The AC in the bedroom(s) was greatly appreciated. Cooling dips in the small pool were also a huge plus for us. Likewise covered deck offered welcomed outdoor space even if it rained. The property is within walking distance to Puerto Viejo town, but not close enough to be disturbed by nightlife. The road between the house and the beach was surprisingly busy in the day but much quiter at night. We would fully recommend.

Lovely home, excellent service
We stayed at this lovely home recently. A very relaxing spot. There is a road which can be busy (during the day, not evening) between the house and the beach but the whole area is so chill that it didn’t seem to matter. We went to Banana Azul every night for drinks and dinner which is a 3 minute walk - great spot. The beach is directly across the street and not busy. The property manager is excellent and very responsive to any inquiries. You do pay someone to do your clothes washing (washer and dryer onsite are not available for guests to use) but the fee is nominal and the property manager will send someone as soon as you request it, and I was happy to support the local community. Nina at Gecko Tours was also very helpful booking us into tours at the last minute. There is incredible zip lining nearby at Nativo adventures (top 3 in Costa Rica according to the guide) and I would have to agree.

Oasis by the beach
My family and I stayed here for 4 nights and absolutely loved our experience here! We loved that there were 2 bedrooms upstairs in the main area and a huge bedroom (almost an in-law unit) downstairs due to the fact that we can all be together but not necessarily on top of each other. The home comes with everything you need and we made good use of all the amenities. We particularly loved that the beach was SO CLOSE! And not only that, but it’s such a beautiful beach. We enjoyed staying just outside of Puerto Viejo away from the hustle and bustle. Thank you for allowing to stay and enjoy your home!

We enjoyed our stay in this house located right across the street from the beach. It was conveniently located near restaurants and a small market. The main kitchen/living room area was quite hot, but the bedrooms had air conditioning and the outside deck had a nice breeze. The dipping pool was perfect!

Anniversary get away
The house is right across the beach from a road. The road is not heavily trafficked, but you do hear it. Both upstairs rooms are the same with their own bathroom. You can hear the ocean from the rooms. View is amazing. Neighborhood is quiet. There is a small grocery store by the Hotel Banana de Azul. Good place for drinks and food on the beach. Puerto Viejo is about 1.25 miles from the house. You can ride bikes, or just walk.

Perfect place to stay in Carribean Costa Rica
This house was fantastic and suited us very well. Three climate controlled bedrooms with the rest of the house open air Costa Rican style. Location is perfect. We checked out many beaches and in the end decided that our favorite beach was the 20 miles of black sand located less than a one minute walk from our door (Playa Negra). You can also walk the beach to Peurto Viejo if you don't want to deal with cars. Very relaxing vacation. Highly recommend the coffee tour and Cahuita Park. We cooked Carribean style breakfasts and a few dinners and ate our on the lanai. Sounds of waves and even some views. Plunge pool is small but surprisingly deep and refreshing. Outdoor shower a big plus after coming back from beaches. This house is not huge but had plenty of different places to sit/hangout and relax so you can be both alone and/or with your group. Walking distance and driving distance to multiple restaurants. Grocery stores and pharmacies a short drive from the house. My family now wants to check out a different part of the world - but I want to head back to Costa Rica and stay again at this house! The country is beautiful and the people are friendly and helpfu.

Fantastic location for Carribean Costa Rica
We loved this property. Spent two weeks here and hated to leave. While we did check out multiple beaches in the area, in the end we decided that 20 miles of black sand 1 minute walk from our door (Playa Negra) was the best beach to be had. The property itself is very well layed out with that Costa Rica feeling of being outdoors even when in the house (except for the bedrooms that were climate controlled). Grocery stores and pharmacies were nearby. We ate breakfasts and even a few dinners Caribbean style cooking in the kitchen and eating out on the lanai. Ate out too and really enjoyed the restaurants in the area. Highly advise the chocolate tour and making it up to Cahuita Park. The property itself had everything we needed including a small but surprisingly deep plunge pool and an outdoor shower. The property managers were very helpful. I would love to make it back to this house and this part of Costa Rica. A beautiful country, people and house to stay in. Such a lovely place to visit!!!

Great house. Excellent location. We had a rental car, but you would not need one. You can walk to town (20 min on the beach) or take a cab or tuk tuk or bus. Lot's of fun stuff to see. We spent 2 weeks. We were never bored.

We were greeted by Fabio, a pleasant and helpful property manager assistant, along with a nice basket of fruit and locally made chocolates. The garden and plunge pool were beautiful and well maintained. All 3 bedrooms were comfortable and air-conditioned. The "dry" setting on the AC was very helpful to dry towels and clothing in an otherwise humid environment. The kitchen was equipped with most everything we needed. There are tons of restaurants in Puerto Viejo (a 5 minute drive) so we did not do much cooking! There is no TV (which we didn't need anyway), but the internet was great. The black sand beach was beautiful and sparsely populated. Our biggest disappointment was the constant and loud traffic on the road between the house and the beach. Although there were many people on bicycles and motorbikes, access to a car would be very helpful in order to comfortably get to town and to visit all of the wonderful parks and beaches that are within about 10 miles. Unfortunately we arrived after dark, and the house was very difficult to find. Set your WAZE map to "Black Pearl" motel which is next door to the property. Thank you to Kassandra for being readily available to answer all of our questions!

Idyllic stay
The property and the location exceeded our expectations. It's not easy to impress teenagers, and all four us were in awe of the spaciousness and above par comfort of Casa Luna. To have the beautiful black sand beach and thrilling waves just steps away, as well as such delicious and affordable food a short distance away, left us wanting/needing nothing else. This property exceeded our budget in comparison with the rest of our stay in CR, but was well worth it! Special thanks to Nina at Gecko Trails for handling the logistics of transportation from the airport and car rental !

Perfection don’t want to leave!
We are already wanting to book our stay for next year. The casa is very safe & walking distance to the beach & to a small store. We have never stayed at a rental that felt so much like home. If you need it, it’s there. And listening to the waves put us in blissful sleep at night. Perfect plunge pool for after the beach. So many special thoughts have been put into creating this home so thank you so much for sharing! And Nina is just a friend for life now. Only miscommunication was that we could use the washer/dryer but when we were told that it could be done for us as such a cheap price - it was a non issue! Wonderful porch!
The space is great for two couples as there are two upstairs identical bedrooms each with it’s own bathroom. It is also very conveniently located near a small resort that is happy to have you use their already set up beach chairs and have a restaurant and bar. The primary negative is that there is a gravel road between the house and the beach that creates some road noise. Not that big of a deal as you can still hear the waves and it was interesting to see locals coming and going along the road.

I couldn’t be more happy with the choice we made to stay at Casa Luna while in Puerto Viejo. We were deciding whether to visit the pacific side or the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and when we saw Casa Luna it sealed the deal for the Caribbean. We were not disappointed. It was centrally located to the beaches and other activities but also a very relaxing environment on it’s own. It’s a short walking distance to a market and restaurant which was very convenient if we needed something quickly or if we decided we wanted to eat out instead. The property management team was great in making sure we were comfortable and will assist in arranging activities during your stay. Prior to our visit Nina made sure the beds upstairs would be set up as kings or twins based on our wants/needs. She was visiting family during our stay so Tamara was our contact while we were at the property. She checked in periodically and had a genuine concern that we’re enjoying the stay. Check in was easy, we had 4 adults and 2 children with us and we were greeted at the house to do a walkthrough. Nina (who manages the house) lives next door so if there are any issues or emergencies it was comforting knowing someone was there if needed! Highly recommend staying here! The house is beautiful and it is in a great location. Right across the street from the beach!

Casa Luna was perfect for our group of 5. The house itself was great , lots of seating and the outdoor living space was magical with the sound of the surf. Nina the house manager was amazing, we could not have asked for a better hostess. With Nina’s assistance we hired a cook ( Ashton) to come in a prepare a Caribbean meal for us, best dinner of the week! Loved everything about this trip, we will be back!

The beach house was very nice and clean. Location is great and everyone very friendly. Privacy was the only thing lacking because the owner and/or caretaker was on the property hanging out by the pool area a majority of the time we were there. Also for the price we paid a tv wouldn’t hurt. Lastly there was garbage piled up right next to the house for the entire time we were there. Not the owners fault but as much as they were hanging out by the house trimming plants,etc..they could have cleaned it up a bit.

Hello Jason, Firstly I'd like to point out that you didn't pay your 2nd payment for our house rental before you arrived despite many request for payment. That amount has not been paid to date. This decision to not pay us was made long before you arrived at our house for your vacation. Also, Nina, our property manager lives right next door and would have been happy to rectify any of your issues had you said anything to her. We are a full service home with people who will bend over backwards to make sure your stay is to your satisfaction. We are all sad and confused by your comments as Nina had no idea. Philip and I own the house and live full time in Canada. We decided to forgo the TV in our home to enjoy our paradise completely but we do offer high speed internet so our guests can link to Netflix, movies or TV on their own devices anytime they'd like. We don't include TV on the listing either so you are made aware of this before you arrive. As for the garbage we apologize for that. During the busy season we are having some difficulty with neighbours dumping their garbage on the corner near the house before it is collected. Our personal house garbage is separated, composted, recycled and put in a container for pick up and is not a part of this. The good news is that we will be having this garbage removed weekly at our own expense to make sure this doesn't happen in the future. As for our gardener, we are in the process of building our garden back after renovations and will be more careful in the future to make sure that the landscaping crew and staff are not seen. Absolutely beautiful beach house on Playa Negra
Casa Luna is all that you could ask in a vacation rental. Well situated across the road from the beach, the property is new and clean. The design of the house has been well thought out to ensure that there is room for everyone. On the second floor there are two identical bedrooms (with A/C) and bathrooms so that each couple has their own private space. The kitchen is well-equipped for dining in (grocery stores in town stocked with everything you need) and there is a very comfortable couch. The room has high ceilings and there is lots of light from the wall of sliding glass doors that opens onto the balcony where there is lounge sitting and a dining table with a killer view. Downstairs there is another bedroom & bathroom, more chairs, hammocks & recliners for lounging and a perfect sized plunge pool for cooling off. The property has a wall around it and a gate that locks so we felt very comfortable and secure. The property manager Nina is right next door to address any questions. We rented bicycles from Banana Azul which is just down the beach and enjoyed our days visiting the other beaches, the Jaguar Rescue Center and checking out many of the excellent dining choices in town which is about ten minutes away by bike. Coming back to Casa Luna following these adventures was a treat. This is one of the nicest, most comfortable vacation rentals we've ever stayed at and we would definitely stay here again on a future visit to Puerto Viejo.

Property was very nice. It was a short drive from the center of town or about a 20 minutes walk. The house was very well maintained and space was great. Only comment is the pool is plunge pool so it’s small. The beach is literally a 5 second walk from the front door. It’s a wonderful house. Nina the manager is awesome. Could not be nicer. We had a wonderful time at Casa Luna Beach House! The location is perfect for the travelers that want to be away from the noise of the city but close enough for easy access. Nina was friendly and helpful. The house is just as described, and simply beautiful! We loved floating in the plunge pool after activities around Puerto Viejo every day. Great house. Living room was open air but cold air conditioning to sleep in the bedrooms. Owners were awesome and the location was gorgeous . Loved it. The only bad thing I can think to say is the knives in the drawer are worthless. Might as well hit a tomato with a baseball bat. But that seem to be regular for rentals. Great place.

Lovely home!
Hubby and I stayed at Casa Luna for 8 nights in July 2019 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! I wish we were there now! We can’t thank Nina enough for all her help before and during our stay! The house is newly built and has all the lovely touches that made us feel welcome and comfortable including abundant towels (bath and beach), shampoo/bodywash, coffee/filters/milk, welcome basket of fruit and wine, safe in each bedroom, and the quietest AC units I’ve ever [not] heard. It is located on the corner of 2 roads with a decent amount of foot and vehicle travel. The open-air design of the house allowed us to hear the ocean everywhere in the house! We enjoyed spending hours relaxing to ocean waves on the inside and outside upstairs couches and downstairs hammocks and chairs. We loved the sloth who visited the tree across the street one night! The beach mats and umbrellas were wonderful and we spent many hours, during the day and at night, enjoying the lovely beach. We also appreciated the thermal coffee pot so the coffee was hot when we returned from the beach, hot water, recycling efforts, ample outlets, drying rack, good wifi speed, midweek housecleaning, and retreating to the AC in our bedroom if it got too hot. We didn’t cook any meals in the kitchen but it had everything we needed to do so. The bed was actually 2 twin beds joined together and the mattresses were hard. We rented a small car during our stay (recommended), so we could eat and explore at our leisure. A larger car would have been very difficult to back out of the parking space/gate into the narrow road. It has a locked gate at the road; we felt entirely safe. We highly recommend Casa Luna!

Amazing VRBO!
When we return to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica we plan on staying here again. Nina, did a fantastic job helping us with all of our needs. And Casa Luna worked well for our wants and needs. Although we spent more time on the beach and venturing off into the nearby town, we had a wonderful stay. The town is safe with no issue. We had dinner and enjoyed the small night life Puerto Viejo had to offer and never felt concern or issue. Loved the town and locals!!

We loved this house! The whole property is beautiful, comfortable , awesome for hanging out and relaxing. The house is perfectly designed for indoor/outdoor living. Just wake up in the morning and open the huge push back glass doors, and the ocean is right in front of you. Waves can be heard even with the doors closed! There is a great restaurant just a short walk away, or drive a couple minutes into town where there are more restaurants than we had time to eat at. There are many interesting things to do and see just a few minutes away from this house, great location. Or just stay home and enjoy the plunge pool and lounge chairs. Nina was awesome. She is just a text away if you need anything at all. We would highly recommend this property and hope to stay again in the future.

Casa Luna Beach House
We enjoyed our stay at the beautiful Casa Luna. The house and amenities are accurately described and Nina, the property manager was very friendly and helpful. There are views of the beach from the large balcony/terrace and from the indoor living area and the home is beautifully furnished and comfortable. There are two restaurants close by and the town of Puerto Viejo is a short drive or about a 20 minute walk. I would definitely recommend this property!

Great Location
Although the house was close to other properties it was still very private. The beach was clean and just a short walk to Banana Azul Beach Club and restaurant (good food and service). It was nice to have a fully equipped kitchen to make breakfast. Nina was very accommodating. She did our laundry for us at $8.00 a load. Very reasonable. The booking was a little confusing for me. I wasn't always clear on who I was communicating with, VRBO, the owner or the caretaker. I highly recommend this home. Very clean and modern. AC in the bedrooms was perfect. Thank you Louise.

Fabulous stay at casa luna!
Although the pictures were wonderful somehow they do not do this house justice. The house was built meticulously with high end furnishings. Casa Luna was the perfect stay for our family of four with plenty of space so we weren’t on top of each other. We all agreed the top deck was our favorite spot where we could see and hear the ovean while enjoying wonderful ocean breezes. Although the pool is small the kids really enjoyed it. I loved how close we were to the one beach that was pretty quiet despite Semana Santa. The beds were comfortable and everything we needed in the house( except microwave) was provided. They left a wonderful welcome gift for us and Nina attended to all needs and questions while at the house. Both Louise and Nina were in touch prior to our stay as well. Although the house exceeded our budget, we both agreed it certainly offered the value and was worth the splurge. We would not hesitate to stay in the house again.

A relaxing but never boring spring break
First of all, Casa Luna is beautiful. It was perfect for our family of 4 (kids 12 and 10). The kitchen is beautiful and, aside from a microwave (oddly enough), has everything you need to make your own meals. Nina even gets you started with some fresh fruit, a bottle of wine and essentials like coffee, sugar, creamer, salt, etc. The plunge pool was a refreshing option if you don’t feel like going to the beach, but be careful if you have small kids or can’t swim. It’s surprisingly deep. The beach across the street is a bit choppy but really fun. If you want something a little calmer, Punta UVA is gorgeous. Nina and Manuel took care of everything for us: getting us to and from the house, zip lining (awesome), nature hike (beautiful and relaxing), night hike (unique and cool), jaguar rescue, seeing how coffee’s made, a nice dip under a waterfall (maybe the only thing we would not have done. I would have rather done the private tour of the sanctuary) and horseback riding on the beach and in the jungle (a great way to end our trip). Nina even did a couple of loads of laundry for us. And you’ll be amazed at Manuel’s ability to find animals while driving. They’re not easy to see but he’ll stop or pull over so you don’t miss a sloth, howler monkey or iguana. There isn’t a lot within walking distance so make Taxi Central your friend. But you better practice your Spanish. Do NOT rent a car. The streets are in really bad shape and the cars all have manual transmissions. Puerto Viejo is good for meals and the essentials, but it feels pretty touristy. One definite con is that we flew into San Jose and the house is REALLY FAR from the airport. We hit heavy, standstill traffic back to the airport and it took 7 hours. I checked Google maps and that’s about how long the drive is from Chicago to Pittsburgh. I felt bad for Manuel, especially since he had to drive back. Nina mentioned a regional airport nearby with flights to and from San Jose and we would definitely do that if we went back. Overall a great house with attentive friendly neighbors (Nina and Manuel) and a lovely Spring break.

A few notes: The sea in front of our house is rough over the winter months (popular with surfers) but its often very calm during the summer months (secret.....September is one of the best months to visit us. Not crowded and water is still and perfect for swimming and playing). The town can get crowded during peak season just like the West Coast as the East Coast is becoming extremely popular with visitors. This is why we love Casa Luna Beach House's location because we are close to town (20 minute beach walk or 5 minute drive) but enjoy being located just down the beach and away from the hustle of Puerto Viejo. If you hate long drives (right now there is construction as they widen the road to Purto Viejo from San Jose). A good drive will take 5 hours. Lately with road work it can be 5 to 8 hours) During road work there can be long delays and stops. Solutions: We find departing extremely early in the morning can help and/or driving down on Sundays (1/2 the amount of traffic) A great alternative and a quicker option is to take Sansa Air from the San Jose airport to Limon ($80.00 US each way) (Limon is just 50 minutes from our house) You can grab a shuttle from Limon Airport that will drop you right at Casa Luna Beach House door for $20.00 US. (This trip will take you maximum 3 hours). We have also chartered planes from San Jose to Limon for some of our clients as well.

Slice of paradise
This house is in a great location, just steps from the beautiful Playa Negra beach. Balcony looks straight out to the beach and is a great place to relax. If you don't want to swim at Playa Negra (currents there can be a bit rough at times) there are numerous other great beaches nearby. Nina was a very friendly and helpful host and helped us out with several small requests during our stay. Thanks for a great week!

Modern Comforts with Caribbean Style
Loved the house! You ladies did a great job with the design. The lighting installations for example are versatile and thoughtfully designed. It's great that you can hear the waves even if you close the doors. The ocean breeze keeps the house cool. Also nice to have air conditioning in bedrooms if you choose. The place has several areas to hang out. Plenty of space to gather or take up a spot for alone time. Can watch the waves from the upper veranda, or snooze in hammock by the pool. It's not the quietest place, with dogs barking, kids playing and construction trucks passing but hey the locals are not on vacation. They've got stuff to do and they start early. Location is still excellent with yoga class a short walk down the road, a hotel restaurant/ bar with gorgeous grounds, bike rentals, friendly staff. And they will bring your cocktails to you on the beach. Nina was very nice and helpful as host. She arranged our domestic flights, airport shuttle, tours,and massages. Her recommendations were all spot on. Fell in love Puerto Viejo with it's authentic Caribbean vibe, multitude of restaurants and breathtaking scenery. Pura Vida Shawnna & Josh

Great Beach House Stay
Spent a week in this extremely well equipped house. Cool decor, spotlessly clean. Eco-conscious. We didn’t use the plunge pool as it just seemed unenticing due to the dust in it. We had some minor difficulty cooking pasta as the stove didn’t get hot enough to boil a pot of water without us holding the pot down but worked great for eggs and such. Great location. Can see the water through the trees. 2 min walk to Banana Azul Beach Club which made our stay! Secure parking for our rental car. My mother had some trouble managing the stairs so be mindful of accessibility issues. It’s extremely easy to lock yourself out of the unit as it locks behind you and you need the key to get in and out which also meant if only one of us left, the other(s) were locked in until we returned. Not great in an emergency or for when people wanted to follow later. A second set of keys would’ve been helpful. Owner provided a lot of thoughtful touches such as coffee/milk for first morning, bottled water, beach towels etc that really enhanced our stay. Property manager lives close and was very attentive to our needs and helpful planning excursions and such. There is a lot of truck/motorcycle noise on the roads beside and in front of house during day and the dogs bark pretty much constantly which might be a problem if you’re light sleepers like us. Otherwise we’d come back in a heartbeat.

We appreciate your feedback as well as it helps us keep ahead of anything that may need addressing. We have checked the stovetop and boiled some water without any difficulty. One thing we noticed is that maybe our pots are a bit too light for our stove so we will get some replacement pots. The keys.....there are two sets available for our guests and we've made a few extra copies so that everyone can get keys if they want them. The front door lock is being replaced to make it easier for our guests to use. Dogs barking - a fact of life here in Puerto Viejo, based on your review, we spoke to our neighbour about this and he is now aware his dogs are disturbing our guests so will be more careful when he lets them out in the future. Thank you for the tip. As for the pool. Unfortunately nature takes its course here. Our pump works night and day to keep it clean but It's been unseasonably dry this year and the dirt road kicks up dust which gets in the water and makes it look murky. In order to avoid this we are now going to cover the pool when it's not in use on very dry days to avoid this problem. Dust is an issue that all the rentals nearby have been battling lately due to the unseasonal lack of rain. We are hoping for some rain! Come back and see us again soon. modern and charming beach house - wonderful caribbean lifestyle!
We stayed 1 week in the Casa Luna Beach House and loved it! This place is soooo relaxing and cozy. The house is very well equipped, ideally situated on Playa Negra and it offers a fantastic beach view. We loved staying on the terrace and listening to the Ocean. The little pool is very welcome on hot days. Casa Luna has the best beach front location and it is in a quiet neighbourhood. Nina, the property manager, leaves nearby and is a very kind person, very helpful, absolutely reliable and always available for guests needs. We had a car and everything is easy reachable. The house feels very secure and we felt just like home. Thanks Louise and Nina for hosting us. It was a real pleasure and we already miss Casa Luna.

At beachfront, very well kept, and with everything you need... is like being at home. At a short distance from the center of town in spite of the dirt road. Very secure place to stay. Nina was always available and is a sweet host. We recommend this place for a short or preferably long stay.

The home is close enough to hear the waves rolling in. Great walks down the beach. The AC in the bedrooms was greatly appreciated . Everything supplied for a great vacation . Nice spot
Wonderful location. Nina went above and beyond. She arranged the rental car as well as the zip line tour which was amazing. Her restaurant recommendations were excellent. Very nice place. I would stay here again. The owners are accommodating.
