"I had a pleasant and comfortable stay. I only ate at the hotel one evening but the salmon fillet was delightful. All of the staff were polite and friendly whilst remaining very professional. Nevan, in particular, was remarkably calm, professional and attentive in the face of multiple large coach-parties in addition to private guests, making him a true asset to the establishment. "Excellent stay at the lovely hotel. Spotlessly clean. Room very comfortable and warm. Good amenities. The staff were outstanding very polite courteous welcoming and friendly. Stayed for evening meal and it was excellent one of the best meals I have had at a restaurant. Breakfast excellent freshly cooked to order. Beautiful scenery in a peaceful setting If you are visiting Penrith area this is the place to stay "

"Staff were friendly and helpful. Convenient car parking. Our room was a good size but very tired decor, dust/cobwebs hanging from ceiling, bathroom very old fashioned and in serious need of modernisation. The bedroom (Room 9) overlooked a noisy courtyard and there was music playing until at least 11pm. Breakfast was very good. The hotel also sent an unnecessarily high number of messages via Expedia in the run up to our stay which was more annoying than helpful, particularly as they didn’t display properly and were mostly trying to sell upgrades to our stay."

"Appleby Castle is a special destination, steeped in history that you can experience first hand. Staff care deeply about the castle and we thoroughly enjoyed the piano playing during the meal and the history talk after. Having read some of the other reviews, we can’t say we experienced any of the negatives and thought Peter, Sally (and chef!) did a great job it being just them running the castle."
