To capture one of the best views of the medieval city of Besalú, backed by the snow-capped Pyrenees, you'll need to walk slightly out of town. From the tourist office, head across the car park in a southerly direction and take the road straight on that runs parallel to the river Fluvia. When you reach a t-junction, the right hand fork is signposted “camping,” but you’ll need to turn left. The tarmac road heads uphill. Keep following it until you reach a right hand turn that leads off into a field and towards a farmhouse. Around here is the brow of the hill and offers a stunning view down on to Besalú. I’d recommend heading up here around 9 or 10am, in order to capture the city bathed in the early morning sunlight. Stunning, dramatic medieval town....
My oh my, Besalú. You sure charmed me. This tiny little hamlet is located northwest of Catalunya's biggest city, Girona, and public transport will you get you there in around an hour (for only €4.10 one way). The origins of this bridge are supposedly unknown, but its earliest mention of it in any sort of documentation was in the 11th century, with probably restorations in both the 14th and 20th century. I highly recommend taking a day trip here as I did, or even spending the night to see the city and especially the bridge light up. You won't be disappointed.

Nicely appointed room that was very quiet. Mattresses might be a bit firm for some. The friendly, helpful staff was as great as they were on our previous visit 10 years ago. Great value and a short stroll from the historic district.
