I liked the location as it is near public transportation and many restaurants. It is set back far enough from the street that it is quiet. The rooms are spacious about 350 to 400 square feet. The breakfast buffet is impressive with a big selection. The property is rundown and in need of a facelift. Overall it is good value compared to the other hotels most of which were higher priced.

Its quite old outside and shares with residents in the building, but inside is renovated and clean, quite spacious too. The staff didn't speak good English and didn't explain properly the instruction to find the room, which was separated from the main bldg.

The property is charming and well maintained, in an excellent location. Staff are friendly and professional. My room was quiet and comfortable, and I would definitely consider staying at the Zarenhof in the future.

This hotel is conveniently located and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful. We were only given one room key which was problematic when we wanted to go in different directions, but we worked it out. If you are looking for a good location to stay during your trip to Berlin, in a hotel with comfortable beds then this hotel is for you. I would consider this a three star hotel by American standards.

Fab Location !
Great location right next to tube station. Lots of bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Rooms were very clean and very quiet. Highly recommend.

Wi-Fi had serious problems, dropping every few minutes. Signal strength was fine; it's more likely they have a bad setup using repeaters which aren't getting a good signal from the source (I work in IT and setup routers). I brought this issue up to the front desk on my 2nd day: the guy at the desk called the manager, but nothing they could do. At check out the next day, I said I'd appreciate a partial refund for the problems. The person working the desk (either the owner or the owner's brother, based on a prominently display portrait at reception) handled the situation extremely poorly: "This is the first I've heard of it." "I'll have to talk to the manager." (picked up the phone, didn't actually talk to anyone). "How about a bottle of wine?" (I was headed to the airport.) When he finally got to the point of recognizing I wanted an actual refund, and asked me how much, I suggested 20 euros. He became irate, swearing, commenting that "Wi-Fi didn't even exist 10 years ago!" (it did), and finally *throwing* a 10 euro note at me (I had to pick it up off the floor). The Wi-Fi situation was bad, but the way he dealt with this made it so much worse.

Excellent + affordable place in Berlin's best bit
For the price, a spacious room with a nice little balcony overlooking a quiet internal courtyard. Very handy location, close to the u-bahn, and a reasonable walk into the centre. The wifi was over-stretched in the evening, but overall an excellent stay.

We thought this was a lovely place to stay in Berlin. Very convenient to train and bus services. Quiet courtyard with balcony overlooking it. Friendly, helpful staff for us Americans.

Great staff and very friendly, and for Berlin, that is something special. The rooms were somewhat dated, but the convenience to the ubahn was perfect. The rooms do not have AC, but it cooled down nicely at night, and since the hotel has a wonderfully quiet courtyard, we could leave the windows open. The best part was the breakfast - worth every euro!

The hotel was in a great location for me. It was like a small studio apartment with a kitchenette and a balcony with a windowbox of geraniums in a quiet courtyard. Vert comfortable and homey for my nine day stay.

I loved the location of the hotel which was only a couple of stops from Alexanderplatz on the UBahn in a buzzy but not noisy area. My room was a double with a balcony. The whole hotel had an old world feel but wasn’t old fashioned. The WiFi works and there are plenty of plug sockets for recharging phones etc.

This hotel is in a very fun part of town, Prenzlauerberg, and at "ground zero" of several train lines and a major subway line. It's ablaze with cafe's and shops in all directions. The hotel itself is part of a multi-courtyard classic 6 story Berlin apartment complex, so while it is totally a hotel, you almost feel like you're renting a classic 1910 prewar apartment for a week. All the internal rooms have nice balconies.

A really clean and comfortable hotel. The area is very pleasant, lots of shops, places to eat and have a drink. The room was comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was so plentiful and delicious with German and Russian food. I recommend it.

Generally it was ok as we only came back to the hotel to sleep.Bed 2as a bit creaky upon movement.Staff were very friendly & helpful. The only complaint is that the stairwell to go the room was in pitch black darkness & had to use phone flashlight to navigate stairs to our room on the 2nd floor.

Different type of hotel set in traditional courtyard building, rooms have kitchen unit, fridge and safe at no extra cost. Reception is in separate shop front on street. You come and go without going through a lobby. Like having your own apartment in Berlin. Best position for transport being next to U bahn station and two tram lines. Lively area with restaurants and night life. Ublike the mitte this is a taste of real Berlin living.

Great location
The location is great. The front entrance is on a busy street, but the building itself is set way back (in the style of Berlin courtyards) so that it is fairly secluded. The transportation links are great - the U2 U-bahn line and the M1, M12, and M10 tram lines are similarly close. I ended up using the M1 line to get most of the tourist sites, the M10 runs directly to the Hauptbahnhof train station, and it is easy to get to Tegel airport using the U2 line (followed by a transfer to the S-bahn and a transfer to the airport bus). There are plenty of restaurants around, although many of them seem to cater to lower end tourists. The hotel upgraded me to a larger room with a small kitchenette. I find hotel breakfasts in general to have way too much food, so I saved some money by buying some food items from a nearby supermarket and preparing my own breakfast. The WiFi worked sporadically, but it was not a major issue for me because I picked up a German SIM card.
