Historic Arts District Gastro Loft
Summary:
This newly renovated loft was re-created from a long-neglected space in the historic Sheffield building. A perfect getaway for two, the loft is located above the area’s hottest new restaurant, the Houndstooth. Classic urban finishes - high ceilings, exposed brick, hardwood floors...and an expansive view of City Center Park. Houndstooth draws diners from as far away as Chicago - a visit to Benton Harbor will not be complete without experiencing the big city fare of this hot spot.
The Space:
Located on the third floor, this bright loft overlooks City Center Park and makes a great place from which to explore surrounding destinations... Lake Michigan is a short drive, downtown St. Joseph is across the River, and the Golf Club at Harbor Shores is just around the corner.
Guests may park in the public parking lot to the rear of the building. In the event that the lot is full, guests may park on the street.
The 650sf loft features an open kitchen/living room, bathroom, and bedroom and includes a stacking washer/dryer. Fully furnished with everything you need to enjoy Southwest Michigan!
Please note the living room couch is not a sofa bed, you can sleep on the couch.
The Neighborhood:
The Arts District is a walkable Renaissance neighborhood that has evolved slowly over a span of nearly twenty years. A bit edgy...perhaps mysterious. We’re home to the Mason Jar Cafe, Verde Juice Box, Forte Coffee, the Livery Brew Pub, and Water Street Glassworks, as well as several studios and galleries. The District is a work in progress - you’ll notice vacant buildings along with those in various stages of renovation. First-time visitors may find the area on the quiet side, but the future of the neighborhood is exciting and continues to attract creative pioneers and investors who add to the historic urban vibe. Your visit helps build our story!
We’re just one mile from Whirlpool’s Riverview Campus and right around the corner from the Golf Club at Harbor Shores, home of the Senior PGA. The sandy beaches of Jean Klock Park along Lake Michigan are a short drive away and offer beachgoers the most expansive sandy beach in the area. St. Joseph is just across the river, offering additional dining and shopping destinations.
Getting Around:
The Arts District is roughly 5 square blocks - easy to explore on foot. St. Joe, Lake Michigan and other attractions can be reached in 5-10 minutes by car.
Other Things to Note:
The loft is located two floors above the Houndstooth restaurant, a ‘New American’ bistro that opened in 2019 to rave reviews. The Houndstooth brings farm-fresh, artisan dining to your get-away experience. Shared plates, craft cocktails, and fine wine will blow you away. A romantic covered patio provides guests with an alfresco option during warmer weather. Reservations are strongly recommended!

The place was very clean and nice, the area surrounding. The location was in a pretty run down area and a lot of unhomed people congregated in the park across the street.
What an amazing space! My husband and I stayed here for a weekend getaway and had the best time! The Loft was Immaculate and had everything we needed. Sage was a phenomenal Hostess and made sure that all of our questions were answered long before we even arrived. The location is up and coming and has a lot of promise. We will definitely be back!
The light-filled loft was comfortably furnished and well-equipped. It is in a great location for exploring SW Michigan and the nearby beaches (fun even in the wintertime). Highly recommend!
We truly enjoyed our stay at this unit. It was super clean and very new throughout. Located in downtown Benton Harbor and is right above a upscale restaurant and there are several others nearby. St Joes is just a few miles over the bridge so close to the lake, etc. Highly recommended
In town for a wedding. The unit is beautifully updated in a fabulous old building. Just not much in the immediate neighborhood that you can walk to. It was a good location for our needs. Definitely recommend and would stay again.
Had a great stay! Overall, the loft is very well done. Nicely styled. Much more character than staying in a hotel. Bed was comfy. Communication was great. Location is good. Walking distance to a handful of restaurants. Short drive to the beach and St. Joseph where there are tons of restaurants and bars. Few negatives. First being the noisy air handler. Intake is right over the bed. And when it kicks on, it will wake you up. My noise app registered 73 decibels. Small fridge is fine, but having to get ice from 2 mismatched ice trays in a cheesy freezer door is less than ideal. Perhaps a countertop ice maker would rectify the situation. Record player and a handful of old albums is a nice touch, however, there is no speaker. Luckily I was able to pair it with my Bluetooth speaker. But overall, the experience was diminished by poor sound quality. An upgraded player and a speaker would definitely add to the overall vibe. Overall lighting is great, however, the light above the vanity, whilst very stylish, is simply inadequate when it comes to doing hair, make-up, or even putting in your contacts. Perhaps 2 sconces on either side could make it more functional but yet keep the vibe. Overall, we were very satisfied with the loft and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
The Gastro loft is a super modern space that has lots of natural light and all the amenities needed to make for an at home feel. Located close to many local attractions and beach access. The host/manger was extremely helpful and knowledgeable with questions. Highly recommend this space for a weekend getaway! Definitely will be a return future guest.
The loft was great! It was clean, updated, and closer to several restaurants. The communication was wonderful too with the host!! Overall I would stay again here!
Well equipped and nicely remodeled loft. Easy check in, check out process. Excellent communication. If you are so sensitive- an ac return above your head can be an issue. Not the best neighborhood, but overall great experience. Thank you.
Enjoyed the location. Right above the Houndstooth Restaurant, which knocks out excellent upscale food. We dined there one evening and returned the next night for dessert and cocktail (The same dessert we had the night before - It was so good and traditional, I'm not a dessert guy ) Close walk to the The Brick House and The Livery Brewpub. Easy drive to St. Joseph and the beach area. Multiple well maintained public golf courses within a short drive and wineries. The area does border on a somewhat "blighted" neighborhood between l-94 and the property, but I felt safe. When/if I return to the area I would definitely return to this property. Perfect for a getaway for 2.
Benton Harbor and Detroit's Corktown have things in common
All the indie food venues are good.
Art is a happening
Money from the outside is rehabbing old buildings
The crowd is artsy and progressive
Keep an eye on this town

Liked: Cleanliness, communication
Disliked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
We did not enjoy our stay:Cons: if you have weak or strained body, the 30 stairs to get to the top floor (and over 20 to 2nd) is excruciating. Pack light if you stay here. The pain of carrying my suitcase was too much. The place has only two pillows on the bed, no hangers, and although decorated nicely, heavy dark vibe. Not in a good area. More ghetto like. Stereo not working and worst yet, AFTER I paid and UNLIKE every VRBO I've rented, the manager had the NERVE to compromise my security and demand that I provide a picture of myself holding my DRIVERS LICENSE. Unheard of...not staying at the Ritz. Had to call my state and report my DL as compromised. However, the host had no problem bombarding me with messages of how to take care of their property. Returning the FOB key for parking required I hike up 30 stairs. No shampoo, conditioner, or lotion and TV was not free like most VRBO's. The owner was responsive but the "mgmt" was overkill and demanding.I would not recommend this "stairway to hell" to anyone and wouldn't stay there for a year if it were free. Feel ripped off and according to my state, requiring my drivers license via VRBO might be a violation and they are checking into it.The owner needs to update the facts of his unit starting with the stairs. My husband was healing from a pulled muscle and broken foot yet they never mentioned a ton of stairs? And the restaurant downstairs operates on limited time. Otherwise it is a ghost area and bad stay.
