About this property
Peaceful Nostalgic Mountain Home Memories in the beautiful Vallecito Valley!
Mountain Serenity - Near Vallecito Lake - Home Comforts with Nostalgic Decor in the Mountains! This home is ready for you to make life-long memories in the Vallecito Valley surrounded by breathtaking mountains. The property is located just north of Vallecito Lake in the heart of the mountains near Vallecito Creek and the village of Vallecito, Colorado. 13,000+ foot peaks are visible to the north and mountains are everywhere you look.
The calendar is kept up-to-date, so choose your time to come enjoy our peaceful mountain retreat. There is plenty of room in the home with 3,000 square feet. Sit in front of the roaring fireplace or by the warm wood-burning stove while planning your choice of fun activities. Vallecito Lake is one of Colorado's largest and most beautiful lakes. Vallecito (pronounced 'vy-ya-see-toe') is only 23 miles northeast of Durango. The beautiful recreational area offers year-round enjoyment for the entire family.
The home is well furnished with delightfully rustic, nostalgic mountain decor and charming antiques. The kitchen is modern and well equipped and there is a large dining table for great family meals. Games and puzzles are provided, as well as informational brochures about local points of interest and activities. There are 4 bedrooms with beds for 10 (1 king, 2 queens and 2 fulls) and 2 bathrooms. If you just can’t leave the modern world behind, high-speed wireless internet and a Smart TV are provided free of charge. Cell phone coverage is strong.
PLEASE NOTE: There are several areas with steps inside the house. The den is 2 steps below the family room, the dining area is 1 step below the kitchen, there are stairs from the downstairs to the upstairs landing, and the two master bedrooms are 2 steps above the landing. There are also 2 steps to enter the 2 front doors. The steps add interesting character to the interior of the home. However, some elderly or mobility impaired people find these steps challenging, and this should be taken into consideration before reserving the property. Additionally, please note that all bedrooms are located upstairs.
Vallecito means “little valley”, and, as the name suggests, the village of Vallecito is nestled between two mountain ridges on the shores of Vallecito Lake. Vallecito has several eateries and small stores. The Pine (Piños) and Vallecito Rivers flow from the Weminuche Wilderness into Vallecito Lake.
The mountain and lake scenery are stunning. Grimes Creek and the Vallecito River are ¼ mile away from the house, and Vallecito Lake is a 1/2 mile to the south. Great fishing can be found at the lake, Pine (Pinos) River & Vallecito River, as well as many local streams. The lake is open to recreation of all types. Boat inspection is required before launching. You can even rent a pontoon boat & fishing gear at the local marina. Fishing is excellent with many game fish including Trout, Salmon, and Northern Pike.
If four-wheeling is your thing, there are miles & miles of off road trails to explore. You will find even more miles of hiking trails following our two rivers into the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness with over 2.5 million acres of public lands with many 13,000+ and 14,000+ peaks that you can explore.
Ride the '1880's' Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or visit Mesa Verde Anasazi Ruins, visit Silverton’s Mining Town, or soak in the healing hot water in Pagosa Springs or Durango, shop or see a movie in historic Durango. Enjoy a day in the quaint town of Ouray, America’s Little Switzerland, or spend a relaxing summer evening at the Bar-D Chuckwagon supper and show. There are excellent golf courses, numerous museums and of course... the scenic million dollar highway.
There are just as many winter activities such as Snowmobiling, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing Downhill/Alpine/Nordic Skiing or a Dinner Sleigh Ride at Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) and nearby ski areas. The house is not “ski-in/ski-out”. The house is about 1 hour from Durango Mountain Resort and 1 ½ hours from Wolf Creek Ski Resort.
We think our mountain home is a peaceful refuge from our busy world. We’re sure you’ll agree!

House was wonderful and clean with a great kitchen. Host was very helpful and responded quickly with questions . Loved the family , Christian and mountain decor!
The property was exactly how the owners define it…peaceful nostalgic. The house couldn’t have been more perfect for our family vacation and we have already been talking about returning. It was nice to see the deer that would come in the evenings, plus the location to the lake was not far at all.
Our family got together in this beautiful home. We had plenty of room to spread out and having 2 separate living areas was great…..One for football watching and one for
Visiting. Kent and Anita have done everything to make your stay easy and enjoyable. We hope to return.
Perfectly placed home near Vallecito Lake. It has all you need - coffee makers - pots and pans - great pot belly stove and additional fireplace. Rooms are large and very comfortable. We loved this place and plan to stay next year. Burned half a cord of firewood in a week - such a cozy place and did not want to leave. Highly recommend. Owner was very responsive but we didn’t need him while there.
We had a wonderful time in this charming cabin. The location is beautiful. The cabin was spacious and had every amenity and kitchen supply we could want, including a griddle and crockpot. The cabin is filled with charming antiques and has a nice variety of games and books.
There were a lot of mosquitoes due to the wet spring, high lake level, and afternoon mountain thunderstorms. A little bug repellent did the trick! We enjoyed hiking, kayaking, going into Durango, driving the million dollar highway to Ouray (breathtaking!) and the fun summer activities at Purgatory. We would love to stay here again if we come back to the area!
Great property. It was perfect for our family gathering. We have other family members who have stayed at this property previously so this was an easy choice for us. Would definitely return here.
The stay was amazing, we had some van issues and they let us stay another day at not charge, because the van was at Durango Motors and we could not leave till Thursday morning. Thank you very very much! The Valley was the best ! FIVE BIG STARS
This mountain home was absolute perfection. The pictures didn’t do it justice! It was fully stocked with everything we could possibly need. The scenery was breathtaking and the spaces inside and out were so welcoming and homey. Our kids didn’t want to leave! The owners were awesome to work with and responsive if anything came up. We will be back!

The cabin was VERY beautiful, comfortable with lots of room...the surroundings were gorgeous...the wild life kept us up at night...but we did not mind the beautiful sounds of nature...
We had a wonderful relaxing time enjoying the smell of rain every day...
We travel to Vallecito several times a year and hope to call it our home some day....
Our ONLY dislike is the cabin wasn't that clean...mainly the bathrooms...were our only issue...overall a great place to spend quality time...
A very nice property with abundant indoor and outdoor space, in a really beautiful setting in a mountain valley northeast of Durango. Only a mile or two to the edge of the Weminuche wilderness, very fine day hiking or backpacking. Good lake access as well on Vallecitos Reservoir for fishing or canoeing. Good mountain biking nearby as well, and restaurant, bar, shopping amenities only a couple miles away if needed. Owners were very communicative and went out of their way to make the stay work for us. House itself was spacious and well-equipped, very comfortable—top of line vacation rental.
Some neighbors were very friendly, others pretty standoffish. But overall just an excellent location & property.
Highly recommended.

Lovely location, disappointing property
Kent was easy to communicate with and referred us to the beautiful Vallecito Community Center for my son's rehearsal dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the area with the ability for multiple families to stay together. The online pictures sold us on the property with 2 bathrooms being the only disadvantage.
The property was beautiful on the outside but disappointing on the interior. We had elderly guests who were not able to maneuver the stairs alone. The stairs from the driveway to the mud room do not have railings, the floors were very uneven and sloped as though tile was placed directly on ground. With the lack of proper lighting and railings, the main level stairs to the den and dining room were a hazard. My elderly father fell down the stairs within 5 minutes of arriving. The electrical is unreliable. Oxygen concentrators and blow driers would only work in certain outlets. The ceilings are very peaked and beds arranged in such a way that you have to duck to get from one side of the bed from the other, needless to say, we hit our heads multiple times.
The home was very dirty. We were the first guests of the season and were assured that the house was cleaned within 4 days of our arrival. The floors had debris throughout. Cob webs were evident throughout the home in just about every corner and in the sinks.
Upon leaving, we were accused of removing 2 blankets from the home and assured that our deposit would cover the replacement cost. We never saw such blankets.
we spent four days in this wonderful home North of Vallecito including a family Thanksgiving. This is a great home for family and friends around the dinner table or in the living room around the fireplace.
The pictures do not do it justus. The area is so quiet and surrounded with beautiful trees. The house had everything you could need and so much space. We had 7 adults there and never got in each other’s way. I would recommend this place and I already have.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Kent and Anita’s home. They are wonderful hosts with impeccable communication. Their home is amazing. Very spacious, well equipped, and even the cupboards are labeled. The area is gorgeous and we loved watching the deer feed in the yard in the morning. Thank you for sharing your home.
House was as listed, excellent stay. Comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen and wonderful deck. Saw lots of deer in yard!! Would definitely stay here again!
