This little downstairs apartment is just right: walkable location, enough room, comfortable bed, good shower, pleasant patio for barbecuing. Descanso is among the quieter streets downtown, although Tremont Avenue traffic is noisy during the day, mostly because of the golf carts that come roaring by. After dinnertime, though, this part of town is blessedly quiet and dark. This apartment in particular has cleverly installed windows to create a really nice breeze; you won't even think of air conditioning, even on a hot day. Unlike some Avalon accommodations, this one is modern on the inside and well-maintained. It's also a very short walk to the magnificent new Von's supermarket, and only a slightly longer walk to all the pleasures of Front Street. We found the check-in process easy in the end, but communication with the office was puzzling at times: first we were told to check in in person, then we were told that an after-hours check in would incur a fee, then the fee was waived, and finally the key was available without an in-person check in at all. Also, the night before we arrived, some after-hours person called to scold us about excessive noise, when we weren't within 450 miles of Catalina Island.
