Sitting alongside the River Eden, it offers something for everyone – history buffs will enjoy the architecture evident in the towns buildings and Appleby Castle, open for visits, outside theatre events, comedy nights and outdoor cinema events throughout the year. Shops, cafés and restaurants offer local crafts alongside local cheeses! Look out for High Cross on Boroughgate, which is the site of the original cheese market. For train enthusiasts, or those looking to enjoy a journey through the stunning surrounding areas, Appleby is on the Settle to Carlisle scenic railway line. Steam trains run weekly through the summer months and the Flying Scotsman passes through on the line from time to time – a sight to behold.
A short stroll form Clarence Cottage is Jubilee Bridge and weir. A great spectacle in Autumn is the sight of the salmon jumping to get ‘up river’, with herons looking to seize an opportunity for a tasty bite. A delightful stretch of riverbank, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, there are otters to be spotted and a wealth of birds and flowers to be noted. Fishing enthusiasts can purchase a ticket from the local ironmongers. Clarence Cottage offers guests an ideal bolthole to enjoy a romantic weekend – perhaps going no further than the public house next door! Alternatively, it offers an excellent base from which to enjoy the Eden Valley, North Pennines and Northern Lakes with Lake Ullswater just a short drive away. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 15 yards.

My wife and I have just had a six night stay at Clarence cottage and have loved every minute of it (6th -12th May). The accommodation is spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable, and has everything you may need during your stay. Weather was nice enough to make use of its lovely & peaceful garden which is very well kept. Kitchen was well stocked with all the pots pans & plates etc that we needed. Also a lovely (and thoughtful) welcome pack with fresh milk in the fridge + beer & cider, and chocolates, biscuits & some lovely coffee for the cafetière. Bed is super comfy, & bedroom has plenty of clothes storage & hanging space. Bathroom has both bath and shower. Living room has tv, sofa and a dining table. There are also plenty of books to read & guides for kales & local places of interest.Pub next door which serves food(what’s not to like). I’m a light sleeper and wasn’t disturbed at all during our stay. Great property and great hosts.

I enjoyed my stay at Clarence Cottage! The cottage itself was well-appointed, perfectly comfortable, and had all the amenities I needed. I happened to have some excellent weather so I enjoyed my coffee in the garden most mornings (and very rarely saw anyone using the pub garden so it felt very private). Appleby itself had lots to offer, including some lovely walks I could do right from the front door of Clarence Cottage. It was also well-located for day trips into the Lake District and up to Hadrian's Wall. Finding parking on the street was never an issue, and communication with the hosts was smooth and quick. I would recommend this place as a nice home base for those looking for a quiet retreat with the added bonus of amenities close at hand.

A great location. The only downside of it was the parking could be a bit difficult outside as next door to a pub (which was handy).

We knew as soon as we entered this delightful cottage that we had made a good choice. It was immaculately clean, there was a welcome pack of milk, jam, marmalade, tea, coffee and chocolates. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. The bathroom is large with a lovely shower. We made use of the lovely garden with swing and picnic table. The pub next door has very welcoming staff and super food. An excellent 4 night stay for us. Would highly recommend.

Great value in a lovely small market town well placed for the Lakes and the North Pennines and with easy access from the A66. The Cottage is compact but ideal for one or two people and very dog friendly. Equipment in the cottage is excellent as was the cleanliness.
The location right next door to the Royal Oak pub is very useful for meals if you don't want to cook, or drive so being able to have a drink.
The only slight negatives are not having a reserved parking space and fairly steep steps to access the garden.
However given the price of accommodation Clarence Cottage is very recommendable!

This cottage is lovely.
This cottage is lovely. Everything you need it’s a home from home. Great walks and lovely place. We had a superb week. Would definitely love to go back in the summer as the garden was lovely but we didn’t get enough sunny weather to really use it. Very dog friendly place.
